Leon John Schmaltz, 83, of Baroda passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2026 at home surrounded by his loving family and close friends.
A funeral service will be held 10 AM on Wednesday, March 4, 2026 at Trinity Lutheran Church of Glendora, 1733 Glendora Rd., Buchanan with Reverend Jonathan Liebich officiating. Friends may meet with the family from 5-7 PM on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 at Pike Funeral and Cremation Services, Boyd Chapel, 9191 Red Arrow Hwy, Bridgman. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Bridgman. Memorial contributions may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church of Glendora. Online condolences accepted at www.PikeFH.com.
Leon was born on May 4, 1942 in Baroda the son of the late Rhinehold and Elma “Elsie” (Strefling) Schmaltz. On May 22, 1965 he married the former Katherine Ott. Leon was a US Army veteran and a member of the Bridgman American Legion Post 331. He retired from Whirlpool and worked his family grain and vegetable farm. Leon enjoyed painting vintage tractors, hunting, and driving truck. He also spent much of his free time helping at his church.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Katherine; children: Carla (Ed) Zelmer, Connie (Nathan) Banchik, Leon “John” (Lori) Schmaltz, and Ryan (Heidi) Schmaltz; grandchildren: Jake Zelmer, Amanda Vivardo, Lindsey Isom, and Robin Schmaltz; two brothers: Dean (Marilyn) Schmaltz and Gene (Pat) Schmaltz.
Leon was also preceded in death by his sister, Martha Embleton; and a brother, Fred Schmaltz.
Arrangements are entrusted to Pike Funeral and Cremation Services, 9191 Red Arrow Hwy, Bridgman.
