Devoted husband of 49 years of Esther (nee' Simon) Shkolnik. Cherished brother of Barry J. Shkolnik (Marilyn Magnusson) of Wilmette, Ill. Dear Brother in law of Rose (late Sheridan) of Winston Salem, NC, Beth Simon (Andrew) Swartz, of Slingerlands, NY, David (Elena)Simon of Hamden, CT, and Joseph (Annette) Simon of Orchard Park, NY. Uncle of Daniel (Lindsay) Swartz, late Kyra Swartz, and Sherilyn and Andrea Simon. Lifelong friend of Steve (Marilyn) Sanderson of Downers Grove, IL. Graveside service will be held on Wednesday December 24th at 10 am at Forest Lawn Cemetery (meet at Delaware and Delevan gate). Although I was at D´Youville College for only a short time, I came to know Leon well. He was smart, helpful, engaging, and, above all, a good person. He will be missed. My condolences to Leon´s family and friends. M. Pikus

My condolences to Leon's family and friends. We got to know each other at D'Youville, when every semester he would do a presentation to my students on how to find articles in periodicals--this in the days before the Internet and databases. He was enthusiastic about what he did, and he did it well. I was always grateful when he was the one doing the instruction, because I knew the students would learn a lot and they'd be confident asking him for help.

To have had Leon as a friend for over 65 years has truly been a blessing. From elementary school to high school through college then work and marriage we have always been in touch. We would bike together (and I busted his bike once), camp together, fish together, play ball together, sit and chat in his room and just move through life. Leon was my father's student teacher, in history, at Schurz High School in Chicago where he regarded my dad as a mentor. He would always introduce me as his longest friendship which would light up my heart. Years of wonderful memories will never be forgotten. Rest in peace my friend, you were the best friend I ever had.
