Leon Sutterfield Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by John M. Ireland & Son Funeral Home and Chapel on Oct. 3, 2025.
Melvin Leon Sutterfield was born on June 23, 1939, in Stuart, Oklahoma, to Winfred "Red" Sutterfield and Cora Sutterfield. He passed away on September 29, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.
Growing up in Stuart, Leon excelled in sports and caused his fair share of trouble on the family farm. After school, he proudly answered his nation's call and served in the United States Navy, traveling the world during his two years of service. Following his military duty, he attended trade school and worked as an electrician alongside his brother in Oklahoma City.
Leon's life was transformed forever when he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and later answered God's calling to ministry. He dedicated over 42 years to faithfully serving as a pastor, sharing the gospel with humility and living out his faith daily. He was a shepherd to his people and made it his business to show them God's love in word and deed.
Family was the center of Leon's world. He married Janis, his devoted wife of 58 years, and together they raised two daughters. He led his family with constant support, took an active role in the girls' interests, and attended every ball game they played. He delighted in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom love and adore him in return.
He is survived by his daughters, Cheryl Seymour and her husband Culley, and Carol Fowlkes and her husband Eddie; grandchildren, Shawn Seymour (Rachael), Scott Seymour (Bristol), Jay Seymour (Madi), Maddi Kade (Chris), and Jana Kelsay (Austin); great-grandchildren, McCartney Seymour, Scottie Seymour, Bobby Grace, Luke Seymour, Macyn Seymour, Cora Seymour, Nash Seymour, Malachi Seymour, Saylor Seymour, Campbell Seymour, and Nora Kade; and sisters, Jimmie VanSchuyver and Dee Lemon. He is also remembered by many other loving relatives and friends.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Winfred and Cora Sutterfield, and his beloved wife, Janis.
A celebration of Leon's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. at Shartel Church of God in Oklahoma City on October 6th. His family takes comfort in knowing that his journey is complete and he is now rejoicing in heaven.
