Obituary for Colonel Leonard Charles Bieberbach Colonel Leonard Charles Bieberbach, age 79, of Unionville, PA, passed away peacefully on Saturday February 29, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Diane (Behler) Bieberbach, with whom he shared 57years of marriage. Born in Philadelphia, PA he was a son of the late Max Wilhelm Bieberbach and the late Regina (Villa) Bieberbach. Len dedicated his life to our country while in college joining the Platoon Leaders Corps, Marine Corps Reserve in 1959. He was commissioned a second lieutenant upon graduating from West Chester (State College) University in 1962. He was then assigned to the 4th Marine Brigade where he served as Platoon Commander and Executive Officer of an Infantry Company. In 1965, he was designated a Naval Aviator. As an Aviator, he served with the First and Second Marine Aircraft Wings. During his tour with the 1st MAW, he saw action in the Republic of Vietnam flying 480 combat missions during his 13 months in county. He also served as the personal pilot to Lt. Gen, and former Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Robert Cushman; Commanding General, I Corps, RNV; Major Gen Norman J. Anderson, CG 1st Marine Air Wing; and was delegated the responsibility as a pilot of Heads of State and Distinguished Governmental Officials, including Gen. William Westmoreland and General of the Army Omar Bradley USA (Ret.). Col. Bieberbach was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V", the Air Medal for heroic action, twenty four (24) Air Medals for aerial achievements, the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V", the Marine Corps Combat Action Ribbon and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star before retiring in June 1992. He was a longtime faithful member of the Episcopal Church of Advent in Kennett Square serving on the vestry and project manager for the Churches renovation in 2005. Len was the Director of Real Estate of Cigna Corp. and Advanta Corp following is military career officially retiring in 2001. In addition to his wife Diane, he is survived by one daughter, Lee Ann Tutchton (Steven) of Marietta, Ga; one son, Christopher L Bieberbach (Linda) of Cherry Hill NJ; one sister, Jeanne McClellan (Joseph) of West Grove, PA and five grandchildren, Corporal Jason USMC, Cydney, Luke, Regan and Morgan. He was predeceased by two brothers, John and Max. You are invited to visit with Len's family and friends from 10AM to 11AM Saturday March 7, 2020 at the Episcopal Church of the Advent 401 N Union St, Kennett Square, PA 19348. His funeral service will follow at 11AM. Interment with full military honors with escort will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington VA.
