Leonard Buffinton Obituary

Killingworth - Leonard L. "Lenny" Buffinton, 92, of Killingworth, passed away peacefully of natural causes July 4, 2025. A devoted father, loving husband, and cherished friend, Lenny's warm spirit and steady hands left a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Born on Feb. 17, 1933, in New London, Leonard was the beloved son of Doris Armstrong Stubelick and Le Roy Buffinton, and stepson to Zigmund Stubelick, all of whom preceded him in death. He grew up alongside his dear sister, Beverly Stubelick Coffey, who survives him today.

From his earliest days, Lenny displayed a remarkable sense of loyalty, kindness, and curiosity, values that would shape his life for decades to come. After graduating from New London High School in 1952, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1961. Stationed aboard the USS Sierra AD-18, he was promoted to Damage Controlman 2nd class in 1957, developing skills and friendships that would remain close to his heart long after his service ended.

On Nov. 17, 1956, Leonard married Carole Louise Kay, his lifelong partner and the love of his life. Their 57-year marriage, which lasted until Carole's passing Feb. 26, 2014, was a testament to enduring love and mutual respect. It was in the shoreline town of Niantic where they spent most of their years together, and raised four children, each of whom treasured his gentle guidance, love and steadfast support: Melanie L. Gillis, Ellington, Brenda J. Annis and husband Richard C. Annis, Voluntown, Leonard E. A. Buffinton and wife Greta J. Buffinton, Killingworth, and Heather K. Spellman and husband Michael J. Spellman, Stonington. He was a grandfather to seven grandchildren, Jennifer C. Annis Clemons, Keith R. Annis, Michael K. Spellman, Hannah C. Spellman, Gregory E. Gillis, Cody A. Buffinton, and Kyle G. Buffinton. He was also a great-grandfather to Masen C. Clemons, Christian M. Clemons, Lennox J. O'Connor, Jax H. Buffinton, Richard R. Annis, and Eliana F. Annis.

After leaving the Navy, Lenny honed his craft as a carpenter, a trade that perfectly matched his meticulous nature and creative flair. He played a key role in constructing Mystic Village with Libby Construction in 1973, serving as the lead carpenter on iconic features such as the Steak Loft and the beloved paddlewheel, which still graces the center of Mystic Village's duck pond today. Driven by his passion and entrepreneurial spirit, Leonard founded Buffinton Building and Remodeling in 1975, serving the community with honesty and craftsmanship for nineteen years until his retirement in 1994.

Lenny's home was always filled with the rich tones of his guitar, the gentle scratch of a paintbrush against canvas, and the warm rumble of laughter over pool tables and board games. He found joy in working with wood, solving jigsaw puzzles, and creating music. These pastimes were a natural extension of his love for sharing moments-with family, friends, or even new acquaintances drawn in by his open heart.

His devotion to his loved ones, loyalty to friends, and quiet generosity will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Leonard L. Buffinton's legacy endures in every beautifully crafted corner of a home, every melody played, and in the hearts of those he held dear.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date to honor Leonard's remarkable life. Donations may be made in Leonard's memory to the American Lung Association, a cause close to his heart.
