Leonard Mitchell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Barry Wilson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Ltd. on Dec. 30, 2025.
Leonard Allen Mitchell, 83, of Collinsville, IL, passed away on Monday, December 29, 2025, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, IL.

Leonard was born on November 11, 1942, in East St. Louis, IL, to the late Walter and Myrtle (née Holman) Mitchell. He was one of ten children and grew up learning the value of hard work and family.

On January 8, 1966, Leonard married the love of his life, Mary "Kay" Baldridge, and together they shared nearly 60 years of marriage. Leonard retired from Alton Southern Railroad after more than 30 years of dedicated service as a switchman. Prior to his railroad career, he was employed by American Steel. He also proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Air Force.

Leonard enjoyed bowling in earlier years and was an avid fan of horse racing and trips to the casino. He had a creative side and took great pride in building and painting detailed model ships, a hobby he truly loved.

He is survived by his wife, Mary "Kay" Mitchell of Collinsville, IL; his son, Craig (Stacey) Mitchell of Granite City, IL; his daughter, Diana (Eric) Ferrenbach of Collinsville, IL; seven grandchildren, Christopher (Scout) Mitchell, Zachary Ferrenbach, Michaela (Bruce) Kmetz, Corey (Theresa) Mitchell, Collin Everright, Conner Everright, and Joycelyn (Jaret Altenberger) Everright; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Leonard was preceded in death by several siblings.

Memorial visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at Barry Wilson Funeral Home in Maryville, IL. A memorial service will follow at 1:00 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to Shriners Children's Hospital and will be received at the visitation or may be mailed to Barry Wilson Funeral Home, 2800 N. Center Street, Maryville, IL 62062.
