Leonard Sorese Obituary

Leonard J. Sorese, 73, passed away on April 4, 2025, in Vancouver, Washington. Born on July 18, 1951, in New York City, Leonard lived a life defined by service, intellect, and quiet generosity. He served his country with distinction in the United States Air Force, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His military career included numerous international postings where he forged lasting friendships and earned deep respect. After retiring from active duty, Leonard continued his dedication to public service through roles in several federal government agencies. Though naturally private and solitary, Leonard possessed a sharp wit and a warm heart that endeared him to those who knew him well. He built meaningful communities among fellow servicemembers, government colleagues, and neighbors who came to appreciate his hospitality and humor. Always ready with a fine bottle of wine or a home-cooked meal, he never missed an opportunity to share laughter. Leonard had a deep appreciation for culture, gastronomy and history. He was an avid collector of Japanese and military artifacts, drawn to their stories and craftsmanship. He was involved with the Portland Art Museum, volunteering as a board member on both the Asian Art Council and the European Art Council. A true gourmet and wine enthusiast, he delighted in discovering new flavors and sharing them with others. Above all else, Leonard cherished being a grandfather. He adored Jacob and Chloe Gelinas, showering them with surprise visits, thoughtful gifts, and his signature pun-filled humor. His birthday and holiday cards-filled with glitter and laughter-became beloved family traditions. Leonard is lovingly remembered by his daughter Renee Sorese; her husband Marc Gelinas; his grandchildren Jacob and Chloe Gelinas; his sister Mary Ann Sorese; and his brother John Sorese. He was predeceased by his wife Diana Sorese; his brother Vincent; his mother Elizabeth Sorese; and his father Leonard Sorese. Leonard's intelligence, curiosity, kindness, humor and generosity leave behind cherished memories for all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those who loved him dearly. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Leonard to the Portland Art Museum, Portland, OR.
