Leonard Wald, 92, Karlsruhe, ND, passed away on Monday, June 30, 2025, in a Minot hospital.
Leonard John Wald was born on April 21, 1933, on the Ambrose and Katherine Wald farm, rural Karlsruhe, ND, the son of Michael J. and Monica (Boehm) Wald. He attended Sts. Peter and Paul Parochial School through the 6th grade and graduated from Karlsruhe High School. Following graduation, he moved to Minot, where he worked at Montgomery Ward for a time before returning home to assist his father driving bulk fuel.
On October 28, 1952, Leonard joined the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. He was able to return to the United States in March of 1955. Following his honorable discharge, Leonard moved to the Los Angeles, CA area.
He was united in marriage to Louise Casper, and together they had two children, Laura and Mike. Following the death of his father, the family moved to Karlsruhe, where Leonard took over the operations of the Wald Oil Company. Louise died February 3, 1971.
On August 25, 1973, Leonard was united in marriage to Ilene Ulledahl-Saari. He raised her three children like his own. They lived in Karlsruhe where, together, they raised their family and ran the business. Ilene died March 3, 2020. Leonard continued to live in Karlsruhe until his passing.
Leonard enjoyed bowling, playing cards, hunting, gardening and playing Bingo. He was an active member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the VFW. Leonard was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend and will be missed by all that knew him.
Leonard's family would like to thank Christine and Norlynn Olson, Jon and Annette Brewer, Jeremy Phelps, and the Karlsruhe community for the kindness extended to Leonard over these last few years.
He is survived by: children: Darwin (Susan) Saari, Laura (Ronald) Dankmyer, Darcy (Jason) Schiele, Mike (Brenda) Wald and Curt (Michelle) Saari; 12 grandchildren: Jason Saari, Diane Saari, Amber (Chris) Marroquin, James Schiele, Kimberly Schiele, Katrina (Travis) Black, Dana (Cole) Duchscherer, Heather (Dustin) Schenfisch, Drew (Emmy Dykema) Saari, Cory Dankmyer, Brandon (Amanda Aasen)Wald and Cierra Wald; 17 great grandchildren; sister: Monica Scott; brother: Bill (Grace) Wald; in-laws: George Ulledahl, Violet Bartsch, Fern Billadeau and Charlotte Beechler; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; wives: Louise and Ilene; sister: Bertha Choiniere; brother: Ben Wald; sisters-in-law: Teri Wald, Kathleen Ulledahl, Alice Tronson; brothers-in-law: Paul Choiniere, Clarence Tronson; Selmer Ulledahl, LeRoy Ulledahl, Donald Ulledahl, Clarence Ulledahl, Jr, Lawrence Ulledahl and Bill Billadeau; and great-grandchild: Reagan Schenfisch.
Visitation: Monday, July 7, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
Vigil Prayer Service: Monday, July 7, 2025, 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
Mass of Christian Burial: Tuesday, July 8, 2025, 10:30 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Karlsruhe, ND. The service will be recorded and uploaded for the public to view and can be accessed by going to Thompson-Larson Funeral Home's YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/@thompson-larsonfuneralhome3198
