Leslie Young Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lakeview Funeral Home & Crematory on Oct. 1, 2025.
Leslie Young, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on January 8, 1938, in Valparaiso, Indiana, Leslie's life was marked by an unwavering dedication to his family, a storied career, and an infectious enthusiasm for life's simplest pleasures.
For 32 years, Leslie devoted his professional life to Bethlehem Steel, where his dedication and work ethic were evident to all who had the privilege of working alongside him. His care and concern for his community were also constants throughout his life.
As a successful organ transplant recipient, Leslie became a passionate advocate for organ donation. He held deep admiration and gratitude for the Gift of Life House at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota – a place that gave him renewed hope and strength.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Leslie was a loyal fan of the Chicago Cubs and rarely missed a professional or college basketball or football game on television. He had a special fondness for both Purdue and Indiana University teams. His was a familiar face at local games, where he could often be found cheering on his grandchildren, a rolled-up dollar bill ready to celebrate their achievements. As a longtime youth baseball coach, Leslie instilled the values of teamwork and perseverance in countless young athletes.
Leslie's love for the outdoors was evident to all who knew him. A dedicated bird watcher and gardener, he found tranquility in the beauty of nature. His daily walks were a testament to his commitment to health and vitality, and his presence in the neighborhood will be deeply missed.
Leslie is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Collene H. Young, and their children: Donald G. Young (and wife Lori), Robert L. Young, Joy Lynn Young, and Raymond A. Young (and wife Kim). He was a guiding light to his nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, who will carry on his legacy with fond memories of his warmth and wisdom.
Leslie leaves behind his sister, Charolett Miller, brother-in-law, John Kieth, and sister-in-law, Edith Young, along with many cherished nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Laura Young, and his siblings, Robert L. Young, Susie Ann Kieth, and Vernon J. Young.
Those who knew Leslie would describe him as thoughtful, passionate, and loving-a man who embraced life's moments with genuine appreciation. His ability to find joy in the everyday was a gift that he shared freely, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of his company. As Henry David Thoreau once said, "It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see." Leslie truly saw the beauty in the world and in the people around him.
Leslie Young's life was a tapestry of enduring love, steadfast loyalty, and a zest for life that inspired everyone he met. He will be remembered for his kind heart, his unwavering support of his loved ones, and the joy he found in life's simple moments. His memory will be cherished and his legacy will continue to shine brightly through his family and the many lives he touched.
A private family graveside will be held. Graceland Cemetery, 1505 East Morthland Drive, Valparaiso, (219) 462-3511 is caring for the arrangements.
