On October 21, 2023, Lester Samuel Holmes, 93, passed away at his home. Lester was born on September 7, 1930, in Boonsboro, Maryland, to the late Margaret and Leon Holmes, Sr. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army from 1951-1954, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He then went on to work for Harbison-Walker refractories in Baltimore. Lester was a member of the American Legion, and active in the Brooklyn Community United Methodist Church. He enjoyed playing the slot machines, horse racing, and fishing.
Lester was predeceased by his devoted wife of 65 years, Mabel J. Holmes; his dear son, Jeffrey Holmes, and two brother, Leon Holmes, Jr. and James Holmes. He is survived by his beloved children, Leslie Gribben and her husband Donald, and Dr. Gary Holmes and his wife Jo Ann; his loving grandchildren, Jennifer (Troy) Swisher, Anna Holmes, Eve (Sean) Varner, and Eric (Nadine) Holmes; his cherished great-grandchildren, Robert Cook, Olivia Cook, Jacob Cook, Eden Swisher, Audrey Varner, and James Varner.
The family will receive visitors at Singleton Funeral and Cremation Services, P.A., 1 2nd Ave, S.W. (at Crain Hwy.), in Glen Burnie on Wednesday, October 25th, from 5-8 PM. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, October 26th, at 1 PM in the funeral home chapel. Interment Cedar Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Lester's name may be made to Disabled American Veterans at www.dav.org
