LeVar Dee Thompson

 

LeVar Dee Thompson passed away unexpectedly the morning of June 5, 2023, at the age of 81. 

 

Born to parents Varge Monroe and Leona Cox Thompson on April 24, 1942, he spent the first nine months of his life in Murray, Utah.  His family then moved to Layton, so that his father could work at the new Hill Air Force Base.  A few weeks after he turned 11 years old, they moved to Kaysville.  LeVar finished elementary school in Kaysville, attended Central Davis Junior High School in Layton, and graduated from Davis High School in 1960.  He then went on to study at Weber College.

 

On December 11, 1964, he married his childhood friend, L. Pamela Thomson, in the Salt Lake Temple.  They lived in Fruit Heights for a short time before buying a home in Kaysville near where they grew up, living there for the remainder of his life.  Together, LeVar and his beloved Pam raised three sons, Jeff, Greg, and Doug, and were heavily involved in their lives and activities.  LeVar and Pam served for decades with the Boy Scouts of America where both earned many awards, including the Silver Beaver Award.  LeVar also served in Ward and Stake leadership positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for many years, including as a counselor in Elders Quorum and Bishopric, but most enjoyed his time in the Nursery.  Additionally, he served as the Ward Historian while serving in his many other positions.

 

In the 1950’s LeVar’s parents opened Thompson Marine, selling boats and related supplies.  As the oldest child he grew up working at the business and continued selling boats until 1986, when he became a Financial Services Representative with New York Life Insurance Company.  He sold life insurance, investments, and Medicare supplement insurance, and he treated each client as a family friend.  Up until the time of his passing, he continued serving clients and talked about a possible future retirement.

 

LeVar’s sixth grade teacher sparked a lifetime interest in rocks, leading to an ongoing fascination with collecting rocks of all types.  He belonged to the Golden Spike Gem & Mineral Society, and for many years took portions of his collection to elementary schools to share his love of geology with the students. He did this so frequently that he became known to teachers and students as “the Rock Man.”  When LeVar was young, he and his family spent many summers in Yellowstone National Park, and he continued camping and enjoyed outdoor activities of all types with his wife and sons throughout his life.

 

LeVar was preceded in death by his parents, Varge and Leona, and by his brother Darrell.  He is survived by his wife Pam; brothers Val (Judy), Gary (Jill), and Randy (Sheri); sons Jeff (Bonnie), Greg (Gina), and Doug (Rachelle); and fifteen grandchildren. 

 

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 12, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Kaysville Rock Chapel, 25 S. 200 E., Kaysville, Utah.  Friends may visit with the family Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Lindquist’s Kaysville Mortuary, 400 N. Main St., Kaysville, Utah. and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Kaysville Rock Chapel. 

 

Interment will be held at the Kaysville City Cemetery.
