Lewellyn Nelson Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 6, 2025.
Lewellyn "Lew" Nelson Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle to many, passed away peacefully at home, just as he wished, surrounded by the love of his family on September 20th. Lew was born in Lancaster, Minnesota, on November 12, 1934. A proud veteran, he served his country with honor in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War-an experience that helped shape his deep sense of duty and strength of character. His family will forever cherish the stories he shared of his time in the Navy, especially his service aboard the USS Turner (DD-834). In 1953, Lew met the love of his life, Joyce "Chick" Hanson. They built a life rich in love, laughter, and dedication. The moment he saw her, he asked her to marry him. Though she thought he was a little crazy at first, one year later-on September 11, 1954-they began a love story that would last a lifetime. This year, Lew and Joyce celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary, a testament to a bond built on deep affection, unwavering support, and enduring friendship. Together, they raised three daughters: Sherry, Terry, and Jody (Ali), who along with their families, carry on his legacy of courage, humor, and generosity. Lew was a proud devoted and generous grandfather to Chad, Nicholas "Buddy", Michael (Sandy), Kari, Morgan, Riley, and Makenzie, and a loving great-grandfather to Michelle, Matthew, Olivia, Adison, and Talon. He was also cherished by many nieces, nephews, and friends. Lew was preceded in death by his parents, Harriett and Gottfred; his sisters, Aloha Mikrut and Myrna Donnelly; his mother and father in law, Cecile and Hank Hanson, and his son in law, Rick Adams. A hardworking man, Lew retired in 1999 from Union Local 49 after a long career as a skilled crane operator. Outside of work, he was a craftsman at heart. Lew loved working with wood and created countless pieces that will be treasured for generations-like the cradle and potty chair lovingly used by his grandchildren. For over 20 years, Lew and Joyce spent their winters in South Padre Island, Texas, and enjoyed peaceful times at their place in Wisconsin. These getaways were filled with sunshine, relaxation, and the quiet joy of shared memories. Lew's kindness, courage, creativity, generosity, unwavering dedication, and steadfast presence will be missed beyond words. Though his family mourns his loss deeply, they are comforted in knowing he is now free from pain and surrounded by peace. His love lives on in every story told, every piece of wood he shaped, and in the hearts of all who knew him. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Tammy, Lew's dedicated nurse from the VA, as well as the entire VA team, for the compassionate care and unwavering support they provided to both Lew and his family. Your kindness and dedication meant so much during a difficult time. Committal service will be held on October 29th at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, 7601 34th Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55450. Meet at assembly area 3 at 10:15 AM. A luncheon will follow at 12 PM at Kraus Hartig VFW Post 6587, 8100 Pleasant View Dr. Spring Lake Park, MN 55432.
