Lewis Seagull
Westfield
Mr. Lewis Malamud Seagull, 70, passed away Saturday July 15th, 2023 at the Center For Hope in Scotch Plains, NJ.
Born on October 27, 1952 in Newark, NJ to Melvin and Anne Seagull, Lewis was raised with his older siblings Ruth and Henry, in Verona, NJ.
After graduating from Rutgers University in 1974 with a B.A. in English, and newly married to his wife Gail, the couple moved to East Orange, NJ while Lewis attended Seton Hall Law School in Newark.
Upon graduation, Lewis and Gail moved to Little Falls, NJ and Lewis was sworn in as a Passaic County Assistant Prosecutor, where he served for 5 years. After leaving the Prosecutor's office, he and a former law school colleague went into private practice. Following the birth of their first child, Lewis and Gail moved to Madison, NJ and Lewis joined a law practice in Rahway, NJ, specializing in personal injury and medical malpractice. The family moved to Westfield, NJ in 1986. Lewis practiced law as a solo practitioner for 15 years. He then made a late career change and began teaching English classes at various NJ state colleges. He received his Master's Degree in English Writing from Kean University, Union, NJ in 2015. His last position was as an adjunct professor of English at New Jersey City University, Jersey City, NJ.
Lewis was a man of many passions-he loved to cook, play golf, swim, garden, write original fiction, read, listen to music (especially jazz), travel and discuss/debate politics. He was a staunch labor supporter and as a member of the AFT Union, served as Vice President for Adjunct Faculty at NJCU for many years. He was a die-hard Yankee fan, and closely followed his other beloved New York teams-Giants, Knicks and Rangers. As a younger man, he ran in two NYC Marathons and coached both youth soccer and baseball in Westfield.
Lewis is survived by his wife (of 49 years) Gail, sons Matthew and Jordan, daughter Lindsay, granddaughter Avery, sister Ruth, niece Jen, nephew Pete and many first and second cousins.
A memorial service will be held at the Memorial Funeral Home 155 South Avenue Fanwood, NJ at 3pm on Saturday August 19th.
In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to the Westfield YMCA and the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad.
