Libia Mercedes Gonzalez

Libia Gonzalez, born on October 7, 1945, in Caño, Guanica, Puerto Rico, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on February 28, 2026, at JFK Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey. She was 80 years old.

Libia was the cherished daughter of the late Leopoldo Irizarry Sr. and Angélica Arenas Irizarry. She was preceded in death by her beloved brothers Ángel Juan Irizarry, Leopoldo Irizarry, Radames Irizarry, and David Irizarry, as well as her sisters Sara Mendez and Nereida Ortiz.

She is survived by her husband Santos Gonzalez and devoted sisters Alejandrina Velazquez, Margarita Arlequin, Evangelista "Gela" Pérez, Rosa Tiru, and Ada Pineiro. She also leaves behind her brothers-in-law Wilfredo Mendez, Victor Ortiz, Victor Tiru, Rafael Pineiro, Gumercindo Gonzalez, Carlos Gonzalez, Pedro Gonzalez, Ramon Gonzalez, and Sister in law Maria Acevedo.

Libia is also survived by dozens of loving nieces and nephews who will forever cherish her guidance, warmth, and unwavering love. We also remember her beloved dog, Whiskey, whose loyal presence brought her comfort, laughter, and unconditional love.

Libia was a faithful and devoted member of Cross of the Calvary Church since its founding in 1958. Her faith was the foundation of her life, and she remained committed to her church community for decades, offering her presence, prayers, and support to many.

She was employed by Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Edison, New Jersey, where she worked with dedication and integrity for 32 years. Those who knew her respected her strong work ethic and steady spirit.

Above all, Libia will be remembered for her deep love of family, her quiet strength, and her generous heart. She carried herself with grace and resilience, leaving an enduring impact on everyone blessed to know her.

Visitation will take place between the hours of 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, March 4, 2026 and Thursday, March 5, 2026 at the Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 424 East Ave., Perth Amboy, NJ 08861. Funeral services will begin Friday morning at the funeral home at 9:30 AM, followed by a procession to Cross of the Calvary Church for a 10:00 AM funeral mass, located on Gordon St., Perth Amboy. Interment will follow in Alpine Cemetery, Amboy Ave., Perth Amboy.
