Lloyd E. Hammerstrom

Lloyd Ernest Hammerstrom, of Lennox, South Dakota passed from this life on November 19, 2025 in Viborg at the age of 96.

Visitation will take place in the afternoon from 2:00-5:00 pm Sunday, November 23, 2025 at Turner County Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Davis. Funeral Service at 10:00 am, Monday, November 24, 2025 also at the church.

Lloyd was born in Sioux Falls on July 25, 1929 to parents Clarence and Esther (Marks) Hammerstrom. He was raised in Lennox, where he attended country school and high school until corn picking vacation his freshman year. He did not return to high school after corn picking and instead learned the value of hard work on the family farm.

On December 9, 1949 Lloyd was united in marriage to Mary Ann Smidt at Second Reformed Church in Lennox and they settled on a farm east of town, where they raised their two sons and two adopted daughters, as well as fostering over 40 children. Besides staying busy on the farm milking cows and raising chickens, Lloyd worked at John Morrell & Co for 33 years. Lloyd never let the grass grow under his feet. He was well known in the area for team penning and sorting events, hosting hundreds of teams over the 20+ years. He went from doing farming, to milking over 40 cows, to driving teams, and giving wagon rides for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in Sioux Falls. He also started taking his teams out to Wall, South Dakota to re-create old west scenes for artists to photograph and paint.

After Mary Ann's passing in 1998, Lloyd was reconnected with a former classmate, Betty Jibben. Lloyd and Betty were married on April 22, 2000 in Lennox and Betty joined right in with Lloyd in the arena and driving teams. They also started traveling, taking bus trips along with family and friends. Betty even convinced Lloyd to take dancing lessons. Lloyd and Betty were long-time members of Turner County Evangelical Presbyterian Church until they relocated to Pioneer Memorial in Viborg.

Lloyd is survived by his wife of 25 years, Betty (Jibben) Hammerstrom, of Lennox; son Daryl (Barbara) Hammerstrom of Davis; daughter, Susan Hammerstrom of Weatherford, Texas; step-son, Thomas (Catherine) Adams of La Jolla, CA; grandchildren, Rick (Tracie) Hammerstrom, Randy (Erin) Hammerstrom, and Rodney (Tiffany) Hammerstrom; step-grandchildren, Trevor, Mellissa and Samantha; as well as great-grandchildren, Callie, Brodie, Cash, Bailee, and Hunter; and step-great-grandchildren, Morgan, Charlie, and Tommie; and brother, Verlyn (Karen) Hammerstrom of Sheldon, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his first wife, Mary Ann (Smidt) Hammerstrom; children David Hammerstrom and Lori Clow; step-children, Tim Adams and Teresa Adams; siblings, Carol (Robert) Smidt, Alvin (Delores) Hammerstrom, and Harold (Florence) Hammerstrom; and sister-in-law, June Smith.
