Lloyd Samson Hartford Sr., a devoted family man and respected member of the community, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025, in Livonia, Michigan. Born on December 2, 1936, in Detroit, Michigan, Lloyd's journey through life was marked by unwavering loyalty to his loved ones, a passion for his work, and a love for the simple pleasures in life.
Lloyd's story began as the son of Samson and Margaret Hartford, both of whom predeceased him. He was a cherished brother to Sam (Sue), Orville, and Margie (Andy), and he held fond memories of his late siblings, Grace, Clarence, Roy, and Jim. His life was enriched by his beloved wife of nearly 70 years, Gladys Hartford, with whom he shared a love story that blossomed from youthful persistence into a lifelong partnership. Together, they raised two sons, Lloyd (Janet) Jr. and Randy (Barb), who brought joy and pride to Lloyd's life.
Lloyd's legacy continued to grow with the arrival of his grandchildren, Dawn (Michael) Reid and Kristen (Andrew) Meier, whose presence never failed to brighten his day. He was a doting great-grandfather to Anthony, Austin, Aubrey, Amelia, and Avery, each of whom held a special place in his heart. Lloyd's Wednesday morning breakfasts most recently with Sam, Jerry, and David, and his siblings, nephews, and any family member who could join became a cherished tradition, reflecting his commitment to family ties.
An Air Force veteran, Lloyd carried the discipline and dedication from his service into his civilian life. He was a proud member of the Operating Engineers Union Local 324 for the majority of his career, where he was known for his reliability and work ethic. His love for his job was so profound that he retired multiple times, each time returning to the work that gave him so much satisfaction.
Lloyd was a true sports enthusiast, with a loyalty to his Detroit teams-the Tigers, Red Wings, and Lions-that was as steadfast as his love for U of M football. His interest in nature and wild animals, especially deer, reflected his appreciation for the world around him. A homebody at heart, Lloyd found comfort and pride in his home and yard, which he maintained with the utmost care.
Described by those who knew him as reliable, dependable, and trustworthy, Lloyd was the epitome of a man who could be counted on, no matter the circumstance. His stubbornness, which was as much a part of him as his smile, was endearing to those who loved him. Even when he was stubborn just for the sake of it, it was done with a charm that only Lloyd possessed.
Lloyd's passing leaves behind a void that will be felt deeply by his family and all who knew him. Yet, the memories of his unwavering love, his dedication to his family, and the simple joys he cherished will continue to inspire and comfort those who were fortunate enough to be a part of his life.
As we bid farewell to Lloyd Samson Hartford Sr., we celebrate a life well-lived, full of the love and laughter of a family man, the pride of a dedicated worker, and the contentment of a life lived true to oneself. His spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, and his legacy will continue to be honored through the lives he touched. Lloyd's journey through life was a testament to the enduring power of love, loyalty, and family. He will be dearly missed.
