Lloyd Herbert Vollmer December 10, 1928 - August 17,2025 Lloyd Herbert Vollmer was born on a farm near Lake Volney in Le Sueur County, Minnesota on December 10, 1928, the son of Roy and Merle Vollmer. Lloyd had one brother, Roger, and three sisters, Jean, Beth, and Carol. Lloyd attended six years of country school at the Lake Volney School before graduating from Le Center High School in 1948. On July 6, 1948, Lloyd joined the United States Marine Corps, where he earned the rank of Sergeant. He was discharged on July 6th, 1952. He married Dorothy Ann Jewison on July 16, 1951, in Janesville, MN. Together they raised eight daughters and three sons. Lloyd is survived by his eleven children: Judy (Bob) Hagen, Gary (Sarah) Vollmer, Linda Uber, Terry (Paula) Vollmer, Lesa (Charlie) Beeler; Jill (Steve) Michels, Jodi (Michael) See, Carol (Tony) Rengstorf, Lanny (Sissy) Vollmer, Geri (Barry) Evans, Sara (Joseph) Boykin along with 25 Grandchildren, 24 Great-Grandchildren and 5 Great, Great Grandchildren. Lloyd worked as a retired employee of Northern States Power Company and served as the Tourism Director for 39 counties in Southern MN for 13 years. He was an Outdoor Editor for the Mankato Free Press for many years, sharing many stories of his outdoor adventures that he so enjoyed with family and friends. During the 1960s, Lloyd co-chaired the expansion of Minnesota State Parks and was instrumental in the development of Minneopa State Park and in later years, alongside his family they cleared the land and began the development of the William's Nature Center next to Minneopa State Park. It is now a County Park. He was also instrumental in purchasing the land to develop the Sakatah State Trail which runs from Mankato to Faribault, MN. He invested hundreds of man hours to help purchase the land that was developed in the Afton State Park in MN. Lloyd was passionate about the outdoors and he was instrumental in developing parks and recreation areas for future generations to enjoy. He spent most of his free time fishing, hunting and gardening. Lloyd often said that he felt his greatest achievement in life, next to raising his eleven great children, was his total sobriety which he achieved in 1981. Lloyd was also known as Minnesota's Tomato Expert and wrote a book and appeared in local media to discuss how to grow the best tomato. He also wrote multiple books about his life. Lloyd was one of the oldest active members of the LeCenter American Legion Post, where he was a member from 1953 until the time of his death in 2025. Lloyd was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy (Dodie), on September 23, 2006; his parents; brother; and sisters and 2 Sons in Law, Jeff Uber and Chuck Woitas. Lloyd will be laid to rest with full military honors at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN, alongside his wife Dorothy (Dodie) on August 29,2025.
