Lois Monahon Jones

Lois Monahon Jones died on February 23, 2025 at the age of 91. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Calma Case Monahon, and her husband of sixty-four years, Robert (Bob) Hopkins Jones. She is survived by several cousins.
Lois was born in Maysville, Kentucky, on April 28, 1933, and grew up on a farm near Germantown, Kentucky. She graduated from Bracken County High School as president of her class. Later, she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree Magna Cum Laude from Georgetown College and a Master of Arts Degree from George Peabody College for Teachers. Among her collegiate honors were selection by the faculty for inclusion in Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities and induction into Phi Alpha Theta and Kappa Delta Pi.
She began her teaching career as a Rural School Improvement Project teacher sponsored by Berea College at Malaga School, a two-teacher school, in Wolfe County, Kentucky. In Nashville, she taught at Crieve Hall Elementary School, Peabody Demonstration School of Peabody College, and Belmont College. Prior to retiring after thirty-eight years as an educator, she served as Elementary School Principal at Davidson Academy.
Lois was a member of Nashville First Baptist Church, where she met her husband and where she served as Director of the Third Grade Sunday School Department for forty-seven years. While at Belmont College, she served as president of the Belmont Woman's Club, as faculty adviser for Kappa Delta Pi, and as chairman of the patronesses of Sigma Alpha lota. For more than sixty years, she was an active member of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a Society for women educators. During that time, she served the Society in many capacities, including as chapter and state president and was the recipient of the 1993 Xi State (Tennessee) Achievement Award.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday March 6, 2025 at 10 o'clock at First Baptist Church, Seventh and Broadway, Nashville, with Tony Rankin presiding. Interment will be at Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Children's Ministry of First Baptist Church, Davidson Academy, or a charity of one's choice.
