Lois Sandra Labins, 89, of West Hartford, beloved wife for 50 years of the late Stephen H. Labins, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at the Hebrew Home in West Hartford. Born in Hartford on August 15, 1934, daughter of the late Jack and Lillian (Corminick) Winer, she was raised in West Hartford and was a graduate of William H. Hall High School.
After high school, Lois continued her education at Skidmore College. She left school and married Stephen Labins and the young couple moved to Boston and then Brookline, MA and started a family. Lois and Stephen later moved to Salem, MA and then back to West Hartford in the early 1960's where they raised their four sons.
Lois loved doing needlepoint work and after her children were in school, she took a position as a needlepoint instructor at The Yarn Shop in Bishop's Corner in West Hartford. Most of all, Lois will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. In her spare time, she loved reading science fiction books and was an avid bridge player. Her family always looked forward to her home-cooked meals, especially on Thanksgiving and during the Passover Seder.
As a young girl, Lois spent many summers on Lake George with her parents and later took her own family, including many summers at the Sunny Shores Resort. Lois loved swimming and relaxing by the lake while spending quality time with her husband and her sons.
In her later years, Lois began listening to the Grateful Dead and became a devoted fan. She traveled to Grateful Dead shows around the country and was a dedicated member of the Grateful Dead community.
She leaves four sons, Michael Labins and his wife Juju of Emeryville, CA, Robert Labins of Michigan, Chuck Labins and his wife Cindy of Holliston, MA, and Barry Spaulding and his wife Claudia of Northampton, MA; three daughters-in-law, Susan Labins of Avon, Paige Adams of Queensbury, NY, and Judith Labins of Falmouth, MA; six grandchildren, Sarah Soden and her husband Josh of Avon, Annie Labins of Falmouth, MA, David Labins and his wife Lizzy Bui Labins of Dover, NH, Jacqueline Labins of New York, Stephen Labins of Holliston, MA, Stephen Spaulding of Denver, CO, and Elizabeth Spaulding of NY, NY; a great-granddaughter, Stella; a sister-in-law, Barbara Werblin of Marlboro, MA; and a niece, Lisa Werblin of Framingham, MA. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Donald Labins; a niece, Andi Werblin; and a brother-in-law, Marshall Werblin.
A graveside service will be held at Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Rd., Newington, CT 06111 or by visiting, www.cthumane.org/donate.
