Loisann G. Reeder, 85, of Anchorage, died in her sleep on July 9, 2025, at Baxter Senior Living, twelve years after the death of her beloved husband, John Alexander Reeder.
Loisann was born in Duluth, Minnesota, on February 20, 1940, to the late Clyde and Helena Lindemood. Her family later moved to Alaska, where she was raised in Anchorage. She graduated from West Anchorage High School in 1958 and went on to earn her degree in dental hygiene from Oregon Health & Science University. She dedicated 20 years to clinical dental hygiene in Anchorage and contributed to the profession by serving on Alaska's dental hygiene legislative committee.
Loisann met attorney John Reeder shortly after his arrival in Alaska. The two shared a deep connection and married in 1972, just six months after they met. Together, they spent decades exploring Southcentral Alaska-backpacking, skiing, and hiking many of the region's trails. Their most cherished moments were spent at the remote cabin they built on a lake in the Susitna Valley, a spot that became their sanctuary.
Passionate about conservation and public service, Loisann played a pivotal role in protecting the Susitna Valley. She served as the president of the Susitna Valley Association, a group formed in response to a proposed large-scale timber harvest in the area. Her advocacy extended statewide, with appointments to the Alaska Board of Forestry, the Iditarod National Historic Trail Advisory Council, the Alaska Forest Stewardship Committee, and several local committees.
Continuing their legacy of civic involvement, Loisann and John dedicated their estate to The Alaska Community Foundation and the John A. and Loisann Reeder Charitable Trust. These gifts will support causes they held dear: protecting Alaska's environment, fostering civic engagement, expanding access to quality healthcare, and advancing equal rights.
Loisann is survived by her sister, Victoria (John) Smithson. In keeping with her wishes, no formal service will be held. Her ashes will be scattered alongside John's over the lake near their cabin in the Susitna Valley-a place where their love for each other and for Alaska will be remembered always.
