Lona Beatrice Goffney

HONORING THE LIFE, LOVE & LEGACY OF OUR BELOVED
Lona Beatrice Walker (nee) Sykes, 86, was born in Plain Dealing, Louisiana, on July 1, 1938. The youngest of six children born to her loving parents Luther and Idella Sykes was raised in Shongaloo, Louisiana.
She graduated from Charles Brown High School, in Springhill, Louisana, and aspired to a career in nursing when she attended Grambling College.
Lona moved to Houston, Texas to further her career and provide a better life for her children.
She accepted Christ at an early age and later in life joined, attended and was a very faithful, active and beloved member at Zion Temple COGIC, under the leadership of Pastor Kendall Johnson and First Lady Gladys Johnson, until her health failed.
Lona retired from Houston Methodist, working in communications after 38 years. Lona was very creative and enjoyed crafts. She loved to sew, cook, crochet, knit and travel; especially back to the "country".
On March 20, 2025, Lona was called home and passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones at her bedside. Lona was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She believed in family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Idella Sykes, husband Thomas Walker, son Richard Goffney and her siblings.
She is survived by her children, Jacqueline McCall, Ricky Sykes (Jo), Frank Henderson, Michael Henderson; seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
