Loni F. Hurns, 94, died November 13, 2022, peacefully in her sleep at home with her family by her side in Elmsford, NY.
She was born in Mitterteich, Bavaria, Germany, to Karl and Anna Thoma, who named her "Apollonia." In 1947, at the young age of 19, she met and married U.S. Army Capt. John W. Hurns, Jr. and, soon after, relocated to several Army bases in the United States to start her beautiful family. In 1952, she obtained her U.S. Naturalization and legally shortened her name to "Loni."
She was an active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, the Fairview Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Elmsford Senior Citizens, and donated to various charities.
Her hobbies and interests included travelling, entertaining family and friends, knitting, reading, listening and whistling the melody to music, and most of all baking delicious pies and cookies for family and friends!
Loni, most often referred to as "Oma" is survived by her son, Berthold Hurns and daughters, Anneliese Hurns and Heidi Amendola; 13 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Hurns, Jr. (1979), her sons, Desmond Hurns (1993) and Baldwin Hurns (2010) and her two brothers and sisters in Germany.
