Lonnie W. Hughes, age 85, of Newark, passed away on Monday, October 6, 2025.
Lonnie was born in Wilmington, DE, son of the late Nannie (Wiseman) and Embre Hughes. Lonnie attended Brown Vocational high school and went on to work for General Motors in the trim department until his retirement. In his free time, Lonnie enjoyed playing the fiddle and listening to blue grass music, woodworking, gardening and spending time with his family and friends. Lonnie was proud of his garden and even contributed his flowers to Longwood Gardens. In addition to his parents, Lonnie was also predeceased by his loving wife, Janet L. Hughes; brothers, Jim, Jack, and June "Weasel" Hughes; and sister, Joanne.
Lonnie is survived by his daughter Carolyn Kay Hughes; son, Rodney Alan Hughes and his wife, Missy; grandchildren, Jesse Alan Hughes and Brittanee Lauren Hughes (Alex); and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
A visitation for Lonnie will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at the Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Rd, Wilmington, DE 19808, where friends and family may call from 10 am to 11 am. Burial will follow at Gracelawn Memorial Park.
