Lonnie E Stokes

Lonnie E. Stokes, a beloved figure in the Lansing community, passed away on December 15, 2025, at the age of 68. Born on July 30, 1957, in Lansing, Michigan, Lonnie dedicated a significant part of his life to serving others and fostering meaningful connections with friends and family.

For 27 years, Lonnie was an integral part of Michigan State University, where he held multiple roles, including sanitation duties at the Kellogg Center and West Circle, and custodial work at Wonders Hall. His strong work ethic and commitment to excellence ensured that the spaces he maintained were welcoming and well-kept for all who utilized them.

Lonnie was not only known for his dependable nature but also his nurturing spirit. As the eldest of six siblings, he often assumed the role of a third parent, providing support and guidance to his siblings. His sister, Susan (James)Wiggins, along with his brothers Randy, Tim, and Floyd Jr., will remember him as a steadfast presence in their lives, always willing to lend a hand when needed, whether it was house sitting or puppy sitting.

With a personality that radiated kindness and courtesy, Lonnie forged lasting friendships throughout his life. His remarkable memory of musical bands, albums, and equipment became legendary among those who knew him. Many friends and colleagues credit Lonnie with introducing them to new music and artists, showcasing his passion for sharing his interests with others.

In addition to his dedication to work and family, Lonnie proudly served in the United States Marine Corps as a quartermaster during his tour in Asia. This experience deepened his appreciation for military history, as well as his fascination with gangster folklore. He was always eager to share the stories behind the infamous “cool nicknames” of gangsters, such as Lucky Luciano, enriching conversations with his vast knowledge and enthusiasm.

Lonnie is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Margaret Stokes, and his brother Terry Stokes. While he will be missed dearly by his family and friends, Lonnie's legacy of kindness, service, and passion for music and history will resonate with those lucky enough to have known him.
