LoRee Hickman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 29, 2010.
LoRee Terry Hickman October 28, 1919 – May 29, 2010 LoRee Terry Hickman, 90, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, May 29, 2010, surrounded by members of her family, in Birmingham, Alabama. Beloved wife of the late Brigadier General (R) Don Rue Hickman, LoRee is the mother of their four daughters, DeAnn Hickman Giles (John Reid Giles, Jr.) of Birmingham, Alabama, Mary Hickman Higbee (Glen Allen Higbee) of Frederick, Maryland, Pamela Hickman Norris (Robert McKim Norris, Jr.) of Birmingham, Alabama, and Judy Hickman Clark (Paul Milligan Clark) of Centerville, Ohio. She is survived by 25 loving grandchildren and is the great-grandmother to 61 precious ones. Born in Fairview, Utah, on October 28, 1919, to Ernest Berdell Terry and Beatrice Leona Nordstrom Terry, LoRee grew up in Fairview and Spring City, Utah, and was a graduate of North Sanpete High School. She graduated from Snow College, and as a teacher from Brigham Young University. LoRee taught school in Spring City, and at a private boys’ academy when she lived in Laurel, Maryland. On October 6, 1942, LoRee married her college sweetheart, Lieutenant Don Rue Hickman, in the Manti Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For the next three decades his military assignments led them to many corners of the world, including Maryland, Wisconsin, Nevada, Georgia, Japan, Kansas, California, Panama, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Colorado and Utah, to serve their country which they so deeply loved. LoRee was active in the Officers’ Wives Club in many of these places, and served as their president at Ft. Carson, Colorado. Her duties as a hostess and a support to military families left a legacy of love to many around the world. She also served as a leader in her church in all of the places she lived. After retirement from the United States Army, Don and LoRee built their home in Provo, Utah. LoRee was active in the Ladies’ Literary Club and served as its president for a year. She and Don Rue enjoyed their activities in the Silver Slipper Dance Club and in The Sons of the Utah Pioneers. She volunteered for the Utah Valley Symphony Orchestra. They loved attending the theater at BYU and in the community. Their greatest love was following the BYU Cougars and cheering them on to victory in many sports, especially football and basketball. In the fall of 1992, LoRee and Don Rue accepted a call to serve a mission in the Florida Jacksonville Mission of the LDS Church. LoRee loved sharing her testimony, making new friendships, and serving the people in her mission. This mission with her husband was one of the highlights of her life. Since the death of her husband in 2005, LoRee has stayed with her four daughters, often returning to her home in Provo, Utah. She has been by their sides serving with them in their church responsibilities and in their communities. LoRee inspired her daughters with her kindness, loving service and hard work. Her gracious ways have endeared her to many and will be an enduring example to her posterity. LoRee is survived by her dear sister, Carol Terry Harris (Gordon, deceased), and three loving brothers, Darwin Terry (Arlene), Eugene Terry (Leona), and Golden Dean Terry (Cheryl). In addition, she will be remembered by her sister-in-law Leone Medley (George). LoRee was preceded in death by her sister Faun Terry Acord (Frank, deceased), her brother Morris B. Terry (Lil), and sisters-in-law Valna Hiskey (Pete), Fern Madsen (Brady), Berley Bird (Ted), Oma Kay Bills (Ray), and brothers-in-law William Kay Hickman, and Nial Hickman. LoRee loved her many cousins, nephews, nieces, and other family members and friends. The Hickman Family expresses their heartfelt appreciation for all of the love and compassion shown by many. To her wonderful Rock Canyon Ward we extend our gratitude for the caring and concern for Mother, and the kind wishes, prayers and service in her behalf. Thank you to all who loved and served LoRee T.
