Loren Lee Lunders, age 63, of Le Mars, Iowa -formerly Marcus, Iowa - passed away at the Marcus, Iowa nursing home on July 15, 2025, after battling cancer. In March of this year, he was diagnosed with stage four esophageal cancer. It progressed rapidly and unfortunately spread throughout his body. He fought it as hard as he could up until his last breath.
Loren Lee Lunders was born on September 10th, 1961, in Cherokee, Iowa to Ed and Lenora Lunders. He lived on the family farm with his many brothers and sisters South of Cleghorn, Iowa until age 9, where he then moved North of Marcus to the Marcus farmstead. He loved farming and being outside. He never sat still for long. There was always something to be done. When his parents moved to town, he took over the family farm. He worked many jobs and was always known as being a handyman. There wasn't anything he couldn't fix. He never kept idle hands. He welcomed a beautiful daughter, Shelby Lee, into his life in 1991 with his wife Vicki Grashoff. He later raised Shelby on the farm with the help of many family and friends. It was just the two of them for many years. He was a devoted father who did everything in his power to provide the best life he could for her.
In 2013, he sold the farmhouse and moved to Le Mars, Iowa. He enjoyed working for the company Sapp Brothers Petroleum delivering fuel. He worked there for many years, up until the day he found out he was sick. He was one of the hardest working men you'd ever meet. He made many great friends over the years and spent countless hours talking to each and every one of them. We all know how much Loren loved to talk. His friends were his family. He loved riding his motorcycle in any free time he had. He also loved spending time in Mason City with his daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren. He enjoyed taking his beloved dog, TJ, on car rides and long walks.
Loren is survived by his daughter, Shelby (Joseph) Pohlman. Two grandchildren, Royce and McKinley Pohlman. Brothers Jerry (Kathy) Lunders, Dale (Patty) Lunders, and Dave (Susanne) Lunders. His sisters Beverly (Bill) Montie and Connie Vaughn. Brother-in-Laws Al Honermann and Ed Utesch. As well as many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Lenora Lunders. Brother Leroy Lunders. Sisters Dianne Honermann, Susan Burns, and Marrilyn Utesch.
A celebration of life will be held at the Marcus Community Center, 319 N. Main St. Marcus, IA 51035 August 2nd 2025. A visitation with family will be from 10:00am-11:00am. At 11am a prayer service and speeches in dads honor will be done. Dinner to follow with stories of Loren to be told. In lieu of flowers and donations may be made to the Sunnybrook Church HOPE Foundation at 5601 Sunnybrook Dr. Sioux City, IA 51106 To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Loren, please visit our Tree Store.
