Martha Lorene Marks Burroughs
Martha Lorene passed away October 6, 2024, at the age of 89, surrounded by her loving family.
Lorene, as she is known by her family and friends, was born on September 22, 1935, to Oscar and Clara (Reel) Marks who preceded her in death, also preceded her is husband Dr. John Lee Burroughs of 47 years, brothers William Vernon Marks, Lawrence Earl Marks, sister in laws, Margaret Marks, and June Marks.
Survived by daughter, Kathy (Mark) Helstein, grandsons, Logan (Hallie) Helstein, Matthew Helstein, Blake Helstein, sister-in-law and very dear friend, Naomi Burroughs, nieces and nephews, Larry (Julia) Marks, Byron (Janice) Marks, Margie (John) Gordon, Bill (Kathy) Marks, Gary (Cindy) Marks.
Lorene graduated from Marion High School in Marion, Il and Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL. She taught school in Illinois and Missouri, she was a member of First Baptist Church of St. John, St. John, MO for over 40+ years. She worked with children in the church all her life, starting at the age of 18 at Spillertown Baptist Church. In her later years she helped her husband, Dr John Burroughs, as receptionist of his Family Practice.
Lorene loved to collect dolls and owned a doll shop with her niece, Margie, for many years. She loved to read, travel, and spend time with her family and friends.
She always found a way to take care of others and had a very giving heart.

Visitation with the family will be Thursday October 10, 2024, 4pm-6pm, with service starting at 6pm at Sellars Mt. Juliet Funeral Home, 2229 N Mt. Juliet Rd, Mt. Juliet, TN 37122
There will also be a visitation in Marion, IL, on Saturday October 12, 2024, from 11am-1pm, service at 1pm, at Wilson McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 N Court St, Marion, IL 62959 with burial to follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Harrisburg, IL
