Loretta Cory Obituary

Loretta M. Cory

Loretta Mae Cory, 84, of Maumee, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2025. She was born on April 27, 1940, in Monroe, Michigan, to Alvin and Viola Gaynier. Loretta was one of five siblings, growing up on the 100 year old family farm alongside Virginia, Alvin, Mildred Carol, and Arthur.

She attended St. Joseph's Grade School in Erie, Michigan, before graduating from St. Mary Academy in Monroe, MI. Pursuing her passion for nursing, she attended St. Vincent's School of Nursing and became a registered nurse. She dedicated her career to surgical and emergency room nursing and later at The Franciscan Life Center.

On September 14, 1963, Loretta married Francis Joseph Cory at St. Joseph's Church in Erie, Michigan. They settled in Toledo before moving to Maumee in 1968, where they raised their four children, Christina Marie, Michael Joseph, Suzette LeeAnne, and Jonathan Fritz. The family cherished their time at the Cory Cottage on Long Lake in Michigan, a beloved retreat of the Cory clan since 1926.

Known as "Rett" to her family, she balanced her nursing career with raising her children. Loretta also cultivated a deep love for gardening. Her dedication earned her numerous awards including 3rd place for Best Lucas County Residential Garden and recognition as a Master Gardener. She was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Maumee, contributing to the Couple to Couple League and school programs. Her sewing talents were often put to use for costumes and projects.

Loretta is survived by her children, Christina Cory, Michael Cory and Melinda Ludwig, Suzette Dexter and David Dexter, and Fritz Cory and his wife, Angela. She also leaves behind three grandchildren, Emma and Reagan Mae Dexter, and her Miracle Grandbaby, Alexis Cory; as well as her brother, Arthur Gaynier (Dorothy); brother-in-law, Henry Puhl; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, in 2013; along with her parents; and siblings, Virginia Gaynier (Elwood Cousino), Alvin Gaynier (Margie), and Carol Puhl.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Maumee on Saturday, March 1, with visitation from 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m., followed by Mass at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at St. Joseph's cemetery with a luncheon to follow. Arrangements are by Coyle Funeral Home of Toledo.

The family would like to thank the Elizabeth Scott Community and Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Donations may be made in Loretta's memory to the Alzheimer's Association Northwest Ohio Chapter or to St Joseph's Catholic Church Maumee.
