Loretta Douglas, 88, of Lebanon Township, Pleasant Mount passed away on Tuesday morning, August 12, 2025 at home. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 46 years, John E. Bednarz on December 2, 2003. Later, she married Maynard M. Douglas and was blessed with 14 years of marriage with him until his death on September 16, 2024.
Born December 13, 1936 in Brooklyn, New York, she was the daughter of the late William and Helen (Jakabowski) Dietz. She was raised by her beloved grandparents, the late Katherine and Joseph Dec'.
Loretta was a graduate of the William H. Maxwell Vocational High School in Brooklyn, NY. Following graduation, she worked as a private secretary and a stenographer and dictaphone operator. Loretta later enjoyed several years as a supervisor in a grammar school cafeteria. A gifted musician, Loretta learned to play the accordion at an early age. After moving to Wayne County, she shared her musical talent at various venues in the local community including the Equinunk Historical Society and the Wayne County Senior Centers. Loretta also served as the church pianist at the Cold Spring-Rileyville Presbyterian Church. She will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her daughter, Donna Corter and her husband Walter of Pleasant Mount; five grandchildren: Sean Bednarz and his wife Megan, Cheryl Harrant, Justin Corter, Austin Corter, and Julia Corter; five great-grandchildren: Ava, Quinn, Martin, Christopher, and Stetson; a sister Karen of California; a daughter-in-law, Dawn Bednarz of Aiken, South Carolina; and a step-daughter, Nancy Sterck of Honesdale.
Loretta was also preceded in death by two sons: Kenneth J. Bednarz, and Bruce J. Bednarz; a brother, Steven Karczewski; and three sisters, Evelyn, Tina, and Donna.
Funeral Services will be on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Cold Spring-Rileyville Presbyterian Church, 2497 Great Bend Turnpike, Honesdale, PA 18431 with Rev. Douglas Lee, Pastor, and Rev. Jane Pykus co-officiating.
Viewing will be on Friday, August 15 from 4-7 PM at the Howell Family Funeral Home, Inc., Edward R. Howell, Funeral Director, 269 Belmont Street, Waymart, PA 18472.
Burial will be Saturday in Bolkcom Cemetery, Rileyville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Loretta's memory to St. Judes Children's Research Hospital.
