Lorin was born June 10, 1941 in Hudson, South Dakota, a son of Emil and Lorraine (Suter) Miller. After graduating from Hudson High School in 1959, he joined the United States Air Force, honorably serving his country from 1960 to 1964. While he was on leave, his sister arranged for a few friends to go bowling, including one that caught his eye, Diana Spence. The two started dating on his next leave and were engaged upon his return from the service.
Lorin and Diana were united in marriage on November 13, 1965 in Hudson, South Dakota. The couple lived not far from there in Hawarden, Iowa, where Lorin began his career at John Deere dealerships. They moved to Marshalltown in 1970 after Lorin accepted a position as service technician at Southard Implement. With his strong work ethic and dedication, Lorin became well-known among the agricultural community. His career included 58 years with John Deere, 50 of those being in Marshalltown, where he advanced from technician to service manager and finally parts manager. He truly loved working and never would have retired if it was up to him. Lorin was able to instill the same work ethic and dedication within his family.
When he wasn't hard at work, he enjoyed hunting, slow-pitch softball, playing Pepper and 500 and bowling every week for over 25 years at his leisure and with several different leagues. The family enjoyed camping together and horseback trail-riding. He always said his greatest accomplishment in life was his grandchildren and he made sure to be there for every event: dance competitions, concerts, sports and even at the gates holding the horses at their county fair events. Lorin loved capturing those moments with his family behind a camera.
Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 56 years, Diana; his son, Tracy "Zeke" (Dani) Miller of Mason City and daughter, Shannon (Chris) Lander of Marshalltown; 11 grandchildren: Cassy, Lacey, Ashley Mae, Braelyn, Adysen, Hannah, Micah, Noah, Josiah, Elijah and Rebekah; great-grandchildren: Jamie and Sam; siblings: Eleanor Anderson, Francis (Roger) Swalve and Muriel Lind; brothers-in-law: Elgin (Bev) Spence, Rod Spence and Gary (Cheryl) Spence; sisters-in-law: Pam Spence and Cathy Landas and numerous nieces and nephews.
In eternal life, Lorin is reunited with his parents, Emil and Lorraine; sister, Rosemary (Leo) Schneider; his brothers: Leroy Miller and Alvah (Audrey) Miller; great-granddaughter, Lilith Kay; in-laws Earl and Maxine Spence; brothers-in-law, John Anderson and Gary Landas and sister-in-law, Nancy Spence.
