Loring Wolcott Smithies

Loring Wolcott Smithies passed away peacefully on December 18, 2025, at the age of 89, in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. Born on March 29, 1936, in Waterbury, Connecticut, Loring lived a life defined by curiosity, generosity, laughter, and deep love for others. He was a natural storyteller, quick-witted and endlessly kind, a man who made people feel instantly at ease and better for having known him.

The son of Earl and Selma (Wolcott) Smithies, Loring graduated from Brown University in 1958 with a degree in Geology and was proud of his time as a member of Kappa Sigma. He later served as a Special Agent in U.S. Army Intelligence, including service in Inchon, Korea, reflecting his sharp mind, discipline, and sense of duty.

Loring spent much of his professional life at Dun & Bradstreet as a business analyst and sales manager before beginning a second career in residential real estate with Gardner Real Estate. In every role, he was admired not only for his intelligence and work ethic, but for his rare ability to connect with others. He listened without judgment, led with warmth, and welcomed people into his circle.

He was a devoted husband to his beautiful wife of 60 years, Julia "Shirley" (Lawson) Smithies, and a loving father to his daughters, Jill Zimmer (Ken Zimmer) and Amy O'Connor (Daniel O'Connor). He was a proud "Gampy" to six grandchildren: Caroline, Daniel, and Theodore O'Connor, and Hannah, Grace, and Mae Zimmer, who brought him immense joy. Family meant everything to Loring, and he loved fully and unconditionally.

Loring served as a Dartmouth Town Meeting member, helped found Parents of Potter School (POPS) and the girls youth basketball program. He believed in showing up for his family, his town, and the people around him. Loring's passions were many: gardening, cooking, photography, investing and shellfishing. He cherished his home and dear friends in Dartmouth and Marco Island, Florida. He was a faithful fan of the Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots and loved a good sunset, forever looking for the green flash! 

Above all, Loring will be remembered for who he was. He lit up rooms, made people laugh, and made them feel at home. A true man of the people, he leaves behind countless stories, smiles, and a lasting legacy of kindness.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Loring's legacy by seeking new knowledge, embracing the goodness in others, and spreading connection wherever you can. A Celebration of Life for Loring will be held in January for all who knew and loved him. Arrangements are by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford..
