Lorna Neuneker

Lorna Neuneker, 97, passed away peacefully in January of 2026. Lorna was born in 1928, in Galesburg, Illinois, to Clifford and Selma Campbell. She grew up on a farm and gained a perspective for rural life and had an affinity for animals.

Lorna believed in education. Her undergraduate degree was from Western Illinois University, where she met and married the love of her life, Robert Joseph Neuneker. She later obtained a graduate degree from Ball State University and moved to the Chicagoland area where she taught English and home economics for more than thirty years. Later in her career, she received a Certificate in Liberal Arts from the Graham School of Continuing and Professional Studies at the University of Chicago.

Lorna and Robert raised their family in LaGrange. Her inquisitive mind led to a love of reading. She was interested in other people, their perspectives and their lives. Lorna camped with her family throughout the United States and traveled all over the world.

Lorna was a member of the LaGrange area NAACP and spent her life promoting social justice and equality for African Americans, receiving the prestigious NAACP Medgar Evers Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the CommUNITY Diversity Group. She was also an active member of the Unitarian Church of Hinsdale and the League of Women Voters.

Most of all, Lorna cared deeply about others on a one-to-one basis. If someone needed assistance, Lorna was there for them. Many people will attest to how Lorna changed their lives for the better.

Lorna and Robert shared 61 years of beautiful marriage. Robert passed away in 2011. Lorna is lovingly remembered by her three children and their families: Rona Neuneker of LaGrange, Illinois; R. Devin Neuneker and his partner Margeaux of Franklin, TN; Brant Neuneker and his spouse, Alisa, of Rhinebeck, NY; grandchildren Myles Neuneker, Rachel Neuneker, Zach Neuneker, Emma Neuneker; great grandchild Mac Neuneker. Lorna was preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings, Lois Jane Wanfalt and Leland Campbell.

The Neunekers are grateful for the extraordinary care, lovingkindness, compassionate support and gracious guidance provided by family, friends, neighbors, caregivers, and hospice.

A celebration in honor of Lorna's life will be held on April 11, at 2:00 pm, at the Unitarian Church of Hinsdale. Donations in memory of Lorna may be made to the Unitarian Church of Hinsdale Endowment Fund or an organization of your choice.
