Lorraine Anna DeJaeghere was born on a farm near Marshall, to John Henry and Gertrude Anna Hochstatter (Stallmann) on January 1, 1940. She was the youngest of 9 children. She attended school in Marshall and loved learning in school and being with her friends. She was baptized and received First Communion and Confirmation at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church; she was also a member of the Council of Catholic Women. Her faith was her guiding light.
Lorraine met Joseph (Joe) DeJaeghere at a dance in June 1958, and they were married on November 18, 1959, in St. Eloi Catholic Church in Ghent. They farmed near Minneota until 1965 when they moved to their ranch and farm near Russell. Together, they raised six children; she was a wonderful mother, always taking time to be with her children and teach them to read, to cook, or to take care of animals on the farm.
Lorraine loved to help people and she had an eye for beauty. Gardening was her passion and she was very accomplished at sewing – having sewed her own clothes and then for her kids. She also crocheted and embroidered, making towels and many other things for her children and grandchildren. Over the many years, Lorraine and Joe played cards, bowled, and square danced with friends. She loved music – whether listening to vinyl records in the 70s or going to music performances at Hill Street or the VA in Montevideo.
In the late 1980s, Lorraine returned to complete her high school degree and studied to be a nursing assistant for long-term care. She worked for Tyler Healthcare as a home health aide for more than 20 years; helping others was where she was at her best. In 1997 after her children had grown up, Lorraine and Joe moved to an acreage near Tyler – a sort of pre-retirement time, though she continued to work. She was always working in her garden, on a sewing project, or redesigning their home. In 2013, Lorraine and Joe moved to Hill Street Place and enjoyed another phase of retirement. She lived briefly in the Minneota Assisted Living and then happily joined Joe in March 2025 at the VA home in Montevideo, where she enjoyed spending time daily with him and the wonderful nursing care team. Her family spent many loving moments with her in her final weeks. She passed away peacefully on November 15, 2025, at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 15 days.
Lorraine is survived by her loving husband, Joe, of 66 years. Their children: Joe DeJaeghere Jr. (Backus, MN) and his children, Jarred, Nicole and Beth; John DeJaeghere (Russell, MN) and his children, Brent and Ashton; Daniel DeJaeghere and his wife, Brenda (Bemidji, MN) and their children, Spencer and Breyland; Joan DeJaeghere and her husband, Gregor Adriany (Minneapolis, MN) and their children, Noah and Dominik; Mark DeJaeghere (Russell, MN) and his children, Cody, Luke and Jessie; and Julie Pearcy (
Marshall, MN) and her children, Jaden, Riley and Kailyn. She also has 6 great-grandchildren: Ben, Lydia, Aria, Harper, Declan, and Waylon; and a sister, Lucinda (Dennis) Mitchell (Marshall); and sisters and brothers in-law, nieces and nephews of the DeJaeghere and Hochstatter families..
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Gertrude, 5 brothers: John, Lawrence, Lester, Arnold, and Orville, 2 sisters: Arlene and Elaine, and many in-laws, nieces and nephews of the DeJaeghere and Hochstatter families.
