Lorraine P. Wassenberg, age 95, of Marysville, Kansas, passed away on November 28, 2025, at Ascension Living Via Christi Village in Manhattan, Kansas.

Visitation was held from 1 to 5 p.m., Tuesday, December 2, at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. A rosary service followed at 7 p.m. at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in Marysville. Dolores Bruna played the organ while Paula Landoll-Smith sang “Hail Mary, Gentle Woman” and “Faith of Our Fathers.”

A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 3, at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church. Father Quentin Schmitz officiated. Laura O’Neil played the organ while Paula Landoll-Smith led the congregation in singing “Here I Am, Lord,” “The Lord Is My Shepherd,” “Be Not Afraid,” “I Am the Bread of Life,” “O How Lovely Is Your Dwelling Place,” and “On This Day, O Beautiful Mother.”

The pallbearers were Matt Wassenberg, David Wassenberg, Gary Wassenberg, Kurt Staggenborg, Eric Stichternath, and Josh Volle.

Burial followed in St. Gregory’s Catholic Cemetery.

Lorraine was born on February 24, 1930, in Waterville, Kansas, to Carl and Eleanor (Osner) Larson. She attended high school in Waterville for two years before transferring to Marysville High School to take secretarial and typing classes. While in Marysville, she lived with her Aunt Minnie Larson until graduating in 1947.

On May 24, 1951, Lorraine was united in marriage to Louis Wassenberg at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church. Together, they lived in Marysville for a short time before moving south of town to a farm they purchased in 1953. Lorraine was active on the farm and helped with the farm work. After retiring, they moved into Marysville. And more recently she was living at Country Living in Marysville.

She was a member of St. Gregory’s Altar Society, Women’s Chair for Marshall County Farm Bureau, and the Quilting Guild at St. Gregory’s. She also was a 4-H Community and Project Leader for decades. Her and Bud delivered Meals on Wheels and Lorraine volunteered for R.S.V.P. earning many service awards.

Lorraine loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed quilting, sewing, walking, gardening, doing crafts, and cooking. After Louis retired, they traveled on many bus tours.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Louis, in 2008; and son, Greg in 1958.

Survivors include her son, Loren (Rhonda) Wassenberg, Blue Rapids, Kansas; daughters, Leann (Jeff) Altwegg, Riley, Kansas, and LuAnn (Mark) Ward, Wamego, Kansas; seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren, Matt Altwegg of Lenexa; Bryan (Jennifer) Altwegg of Riley and their children, Annalise, Conrad, and Marilynn; Rachel (Ronnie) Moeller of Carbondale and their children, Zoey, Makenna, and Cori; Emily Baker of Emporia and her children, Eva and Aedan; Addie (Roger) Diederich of Manhattan; Nick (Brooke) Ward of Kearney, NE, and their children, Allie, Maggie, Bailee, and Charlee; and Tyler (Monica) Ward of Wamego and their children, Kitra and Kree; and sister, Pearl Ann Shubkagel.

A memorial fund has been established to St. Gregory’s Catholic Church. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary, P.O. Box 147, Marysville, Kansas 66508.
