Mrs. Lou Wood Goodwin Hampton, age 84, passed away Thursday, August 14, 2025, at Chatham Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Mrs. Hampton was born February 19, 1941, in Surry County to Culmer and Nannie Woodruff Wood. She was a member of the State Road Primitive Baptist Church and was a graduate of Appalachian State University. Mrs. Hampton retired after 22 years as an educator at Elkin Elementary School and was an avid gardener and southern cook.
Mrs. Hampton was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, Harold T. Goodwin and Henry Hampton; brother, Larry Wood and wife Vickie; brother-in-law, Kenneth Dameron, and grandson, Josh Lloyd.
Survivors include: her son, Michael Goodwin and wife Angie of Elkin; daughters, Cindy Martin and husband Gary of Jonesville and Vicki Lloyd and husband Chris of Mountain Park; sister, Melba Dameron of Bolivia; grandchildren, Jessica McMillian and husband Frank, Tara Norman, Megan Rafidi and husband James, Marinda Seal and husband Jarred, Tiffany Freeman and husband Wes, Dylan Goodwin and wife Kelsey, and Deah Wilkins and husband Walker, 19 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, August 18, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at the Elkin Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Michael Goodwin officiating. Burial will follow in the State Road Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service.
Flowers will be accepted, and the family requests that memorials be made to the State Road Primitive Baptist Cemetery Fund c/o Sammy Cheek, 2929 South Center Church Road, Thurmond, NC 28683. The family would like to thank the staff of Chatham Nursing and Rehabilitation, especially Zeus and Steve and Mountain Valley Hospice for their care.
