PITTSBURG – Lou Alberta Young, 96, of Pittsburg, passed away early on the morning of Sunday, Feb. 22, 2026, at the Coös County Nursing Hospital in W. Stewartstown, after years of declining health and with her family by her side.
She was born at home in Clarksville on Jan. 7, 1930, a daughter to the late Clayton "Tim" and Alice (Hall) Young. She graduated as the Valedictorian of Pittsburg High School in 1948. While in high school she worked as a caregiver for many families and worked at John's Lodge.
Lou and her husband, Arnold, set the tone for their 76 years of marriage in motion when Lou traveled by bus to Camp Chaffee in Arkansas after Arnold had been drafted into the Army. She stayed in a dormitory to support Arnold through his 16 weeks of basic training before he was deployed to the Korean conflict.
While raising their five children she worked at Tillotson Rubber Factory in Dixville, the Pittsburg School as a cook, and the Pittsburg General Store. She was especially proud of her time at the Coös County Nursing Hospital where she worked for 12 years as a LNA providing compassionate care to her patients. She was always known for working holidays so that those with younger families could be home. She would have little presents for the residents and was always a great advocate for them. Together with her husband over those years, they also owned and operated Young's Garage, Sharon's Restaurant and Dairy Bar, and Arnie's Minimart.
She was active as a volunteer in the Ladies' Aide group at the Farnham Memorial United Methodist Church in Pittsburg, as well as working as an EMT for the Pittsburg Ambulance Corps, where she once used her skills to help a friend that was having a medical emergency in Florida. She was also instrumental in efforts to build the tennis courts at the Pittsburg town park. Throughout her life Lou acted as a caregiver for numerous members of her community. She was known to serve meals to anyone who would walk through her door, feeding many children in need or providing a space to stay.
After retiring, Lou and Arnold spent 10 years wintering in Florida where they made many new friends and enjoyed time at Cypress Gardens. Some of her favorite hobbies were playing dominos, knitting and crafting, and in her younger years, snowmobiling.
Lou was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, as well as a surrogate mother to others, and a friend to all. She fostered many important family traditions including Sunday dinners, Old Home Day Floats, camping, and trips to Santa's Village. Her commitment to her family was unwavering.
In 2023, Lou became the proud recipient of the Boston Post Cane for Pittsburg as its most senior citizen.
She is survived by her loving husband, Arnold Young of Pittsburg; four children: Sidney (Denise) Young of Pittsburg, Sharon Young of Clarksville, Steven (Joanne) Young of Beecher Falls, and Sheridan Young of Georgetown, Tex.; one as close as an adopted son, David "Jim" (Judi) Haynes of Alton Bay, N.H.; her daughter-in-law, Jill Young of Pittsburg; eleven grandchildren: Sonya (Christopher), Joel (Jodi), Megan (Jeffrey), Jessica (Craig), Jennifer (Jesse), Anthony (Martha), Abby (Jason), Michaela, Adam, Miranda, and Brandon (Kathy); and fourteen great-grandchildren: Emma, Isaac, Jaylyn, Jaclyn, Cole (Sierra), Carter (Jenni), Isabelle, Hannah, Aubrie, Cade, Beckett, Brantley, Eli, and Bryce; as well as many other beloved local children who she cared for as her own.
Lou is predeceased by her son, Sanford Young in 2022; a brother, Howard Young, and one she considered a close as a son-in-law, Bertrand Laflamme Sr., and her beloved dog Buffy.
There are no public calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the Farnham Memorial United Methodist Church in Pittsburg.
