Louis "Mike" Coffey

Niantic - Louis "Mike" Coffey passed away peacefully to be with the Lord May 26, 2025, at the age of 87. Born Sept. 11, 1937, in New London, Louis was the youngest of five siblings to the late Owen Sr. and Frances Coffey.

He graduated from New London High School in 1956, and shortly after married the love of his life, Beverly Stubelick, June 10, 1961. Together, they built a beautiful life together in Niantic, with over 63 years of marriage raising their five children and beloved grandson, Sean Coffey.

Louis led an active life and was involved in many community activities and services. Among his activities, he loved serving as an active member of St. Agnes Church in Niantic, volunteering his time with the Life in the Spirit Prison Program where he offered spiritual guidance.

Louis worked at General Dynamics for 38 years starting as a shipfitter working his way up to a contract change estimator. While working full time, he designed the curriculum and taught an accredited shipfitter apprenticeship program through the State of Connecticut.

Outside of his busy work week, Louis found pure joy teaching young percussion students at his in home music studio. Although he worked tirelessly to provide for his family, he always made sure to enjoy time with his wife, family and friends. Louis was an incredible host and loved making sure everyone was having a good time. Louis enjoyed activities such as gardening, dancing and fishing with his wife. They lit up the room when they danced. Louis was also well known for his musical talents as a drummer where he would not only teach, but performed in many bands throughout his life.

Besides his parents, Louis is preceded in death by his siblings: Owen F. Coffey of Niantic, Jane Butler of Montville, Donald Coffey of Niantic, and Catherine Buessler of Minnesota; and his daughter Beverly Coffey of North Carolina. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Coffey of Niantic; son Michael and Amelinda Coffey of Newport, R.I.; daughters, Nancy Coffey and John Schell of Albany, N.Y., Eileen and Robert Gordon of Marysville, Wash., and Rebecca Coffey of Massachusetts. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren he loved dearly: Zigmond Coffey, Sean Coffey, Anna Schell, Henry Schell, Elijah Gordon, Riley Gordon and Adele Bragg. In addition, Louis leaves behind many friends and family members who he has impacted throughout his rich life.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 48 Grand Street, Niantic. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, June 13, at St. Agnes Church, Haigh Ave., Niantic. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Jefferson Avenue, New London.
