Louis Dobay Obituary

Published by Legacy on Sep. 11, 2025.
Louis Joseph Dobay was born one day after Jesus of Nazareth, on the 26th of December, 1962. It wasn't the honor that it seems: he always felt he got half as many presents rather than twice as many! [this is meant to be humorous]. Louis was an extremely gifted artist, writer, and intellectual. Despite the tremendous amount of suffering in his life, he always made the choice to be vulnerable, and to love others, even when they didn't deserve it. He grew up in Houston, Texas, and was graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. He worked in various capacities as a writer, art critic, bookseller and bookstore manager. Despite a diagnosis of schizophrenia in his early 30's, he went on to manage the Marfa Book Company in Marfa, Texas, where he also served a term on the City Council. Louis was loved everywhere he went. He showed graciousness to all, even those whose views included judgement or condemnation of himself. He passed away at Arbor Grace Wellness Center in Littlefield, Texas, on September 10, 2025, around 9 o'clock in the morning, where he had resided for the past 12 years, after brief but severe illness. He is survived by his sisters, Helena Marie Dobay and Katherine Dobay Edmiston.

Family directed services will be held at a later date. Cremation arrangements under the direction of the Moore-Rose Funeral Homes.
