Louis Abner Smith, 74 of Vanderbilt, passed away Thursday, August 8, 2024, at his daughter’s home in Wolverine.

Born in Grayling, Michigan on July 8, 1950, he was the son of Abner and Gwen (Leese) Smith. He was a lifelong area resident.

Lou will be remembered for his skill in construction as a mason. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and camping with his family. Lou loved his family and friends, enjoying any time he could spend visiting with them. Preferring the simple things in life and having a love of nature, he was happiest in the woods, enjoying the quiet.

He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Wolverine American Legion Post #122.

On August 23, 1975, Lou and Kathryn McNaughton were married in the Pigeon River area, one of his favorite places. He was preceded in death by his loving wife on February 26, 2017.

He is survived by his daughter, Tanya (Steve) Watt of Wolverine; grandchildren, Dylan, Brianna, Kaitlyn, and James; his mother, Gwen Smith of Petoskey; a sister, Sandra (Cliff) Smith of Harbor Springs; brothers, Mark (Helen) Smith of Harbor Springs, Gary (Patricia) Smith of Vanderbilt, and Al (Dawn) Smith of Indian River; a son-in-law, Fred Hunnicutt of Laingsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Kathy, he was preceded in death by his father; and a daughter, Dyan Hunnicutt.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at Silver Lake Cemetery in Wolverine, 3:00 P.M., Saturday, September 7, 2024. Following will be a celebration service with a bonfire at Bob Smith's house. If rain, to be announced.
