Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home - Trumbull on Jan. 6, 2025.
Marie Louise Doumar Ambrose, age 100, formerly of
Trumbull, Connecticut, passed away peaacefully on December 30, 2024, in Vero Beach, Florida with her family by her side.
Louise was born in Brooklyn, New York to Ralph and Anna Homsey Doumar on May 27, 1924. Louise grew up in Brooklyn Heights and Bay Ridge, Brooklyn before moving with her family to Bridgeport, Connecticut after high school. There she met the love of her life, Stephen Francis Ambrose. The couple were married in 1950 in Bridgeport at St. Ambrose Church and had 69 happy years together until Steve's passing in November 2019.
Louise attended neighborhood schools in Brooklyn until high school, when she commuted to Manhattan to attend Washington Irving High School to study fashion design in addition to traditional high school subjects. Louise was planning to become a dress designer but the Great Depression and war years altered the course of her life, and business college replaced her dream of design school.
After her family moved to Connecticut, Louise worked in the payroll department of the General Electric appliance plant in Bridgeport, where her career progressed rapidly and she was soon promoted to supervise 18 employees. Louise retired from GE to raise her children in
Trumbull, Connecticut. After her sons were in high school at Fairfield Prep, Louise resumed her business career and joined the payroll department of Fairfield University, where she worked for two decades until becoming a "snowbird," traveling between her homes in Connecticut and Venice, Florida.
Louise's deep religious faith always guided her life. Among her travels in retirement, she was most moved by her visits to the Holy Land and to many Catholic shrines in Europe including Lourdes and Medjugorje. Louise was an active member of her beloved St. Theresa Church in Trumbull for 70 years and took on many leadership roles with the St. Theresa Confraternity.
While Louise ended up with a business career, she never lost her passion for dress design and she enjoyed designing and making most of her outfits throughout her life. And, in May 1971, Louise was recognized for her talents when she won first prize in the Gimbels "Creative Woman at Home" fashion contest for innovative fashion designed from drapery material. Her winning design was for an outfit consisting of a jumpsuit with a contrasting lined floor length coat, and a coordinating skirt, top and bloomer sunsuit.
Louise spent her last three years in Vero Beach, Florida near her family, where she remained vibrant and active in the arts, excelling in jewelry making and painting. In May 2024, she celebrated her centennial birthday with a big bash at Quail Valley River Club in Vero Beach, capping off the evening with a few dance steps with her son.
Louise is survived by her two children, Stephen, Jr. (Vickie) of Vero Beach, Florida and James (Dale) of Lakewood Ranch, Florida and Woodbury, CT, five grandchildren Gabrielle (Ryan), Stephen III (Allie), Sarah, Matthew and Shannon, two great grandchildren Margot Louise and Stephen IV and several nieces and nephews. Louise was predeceased by her sister Laurice and her brother Edmund.
Louise will be greatly missed but we are grateful for the legacy of love she has given us.
Friends and family are invited to attend her funeral service at 11 a.m. on Saturday January 11, 2025 at St. Theresa Church, 5301 Main St.
