Louvena "Shirley" Messer, 73, of Elk Creek, WV, went home to be with the Lord on November 1, 2025, while a patient at Trinity of Mingo Nursing Facility.
Born on January 18, 1952, in Hazard, KY, she was the daughter of the late Ted and Hazel Deskins Collins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers David, Clarence, "Red," and Earnest Collins and her sisters Mary Lou Maynard, Parlee Gartin, Mable Willingham, and Delilah Willingham.
Shirley faced illness bravely for more than three years and received loving care during her time at Trinity. She was a devoted member of Full Gospel Lighthouse Church in Elk Creek for many years. Shirley loved spending time with her family, playing badminton, and enjoying card games like Rummy and Phase 10. Her greatest joy in life was her grandchildren, who were truly her pride and joy.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 56 years, Hubert Messer; her sons Hubert "Hubie" Messer, Robert D. Messer and wife Kimberly, and Curtis Bevins and wife Nancy; and her brother Jimmy Willingham.
She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Jeremy (Morgan) Casey, Keisha Williamson, Tony (Arionna) Messer, Pacey Messer, Steven Dakota Messer, and Robert Joseph (Abby) Messer; and great-grandchildren Karter Beck, Halli, Kenadi, Daxton, and Cole Isaiah.
Shirley will also be lovingly remembered by her special sister-in-law Ernestine "Poochie" Powers and husband Tommy, her dear friend Kaitlyn Steel, whom she loved as a daughter, and a host of caring friends and staff from Trinity Nursing Facility.
Funeral services will be held at Chafin Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at 12:00 p.m., with Rev. Tommy Powers and Brother Curtis Bevins officiating. Burial will follow in the Wellman Cemetery at Elk Creek, WV. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
