Lowell was born to Theodore and Laura (Meyer) Herrs on December 13, 1941 at the family farm west of Linn. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Linn. He attended the Immanuel Grade School and graduated from Linn High School in 1960.
From 1962-1968 Lowell served in the United States Army Reserves 487th Engineers/Fire fighters in Washington, KS. He was honorably discharged, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.
On July 28th, 1973, Lowell was united in marriage to Linda Bowman at the United Methodist Church in Clyde, KS. They began their life together on the farm where Lowell was born. They were blessed with two children – Deanna Lynn and Michael Lowell.
Lowell was a lifelong farmer/rancher, working alongside his brothers, nephews, and son. During his early years of farming, he did custom cutting and hauled semi loads of cattle for area farmers. He particularly liked working with cattle and checking pastures with his good friend Gene Helms. Together they gathered cattle and many runaway bulls for others. As they rode along together, they enjoyed many beautiful sunrises.
Lowell was a “people person.” He enjoyed visiting with friends, family, and yes, even total strangers! He enjoyed spending lots of time at Bruna Implement dealing with the Case IH farm equipment, and he loved socializing with the people that worked there. He loved sports, both as a spectator and as a participant. He played high school football, bowled, and pitched for several fast-pitch softball teams. A bit of a prankster, he would occasionally throw a pitch behind his back to confuse the batter and the home plate umpire. He rooted for the KC Chiefs, KC Royals, and the K-State Wildcats.
Lowell was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Immanuel Men’s Club. Over the years, he served his church in various offices and capacities. He was a member of the Strawberry Township Board and a 50+ year member of the Linn American Legion where he was a past commander.
Preceding him in death were his parents, brother Verlin and his wife Lola Herrs, brother Lavern Herrs, and brother-in-law Dennis Bokelman.
Survivors include his wife Linda of 52 years; children Deanna (Royce) Kolle and Michael Herrs, both of Linn; sister Marcellene Bokelman of Linn; sister-in-law Doris Herrs of Linn; granddaughters Carly Kolle of Salina and Carissa Kolle of Seward, NE; and nephews, nieces, and many friends.
