Lowell Hoyer

The following is an obituary written by Lowell's loving family.

Lowell Norman Hoyer, 76, passed away on September 22, 2025, in Plainfield, Indiana. Born on December 11, 1948, in Milan, Indiana, he then grew up in Osgood with his family. Lowell lived a life full of passion, curiosity, and joy.Lowell was a proud graduate of Jac-Cen-Del High School, Class of 1967, and he went on to earn his bachelor's degree in business from the University of Corpus Christi in 1972. He subsequently spent many beloved years in Texas before returning back to his home state of Indiana. During his college years, he became a member of the Tau Delta Phi Fraternity—a bond he cherished throughout his life. In later years, he found great joy reconnecting with his fraternity brothers through Facebook and reminiscing about their shared adventures. 

Lowell was a man who embraced life with open arms. He had an eclectic taste in music and especially enjoyed yacht rock—tunes by Chicago, Neil Diamond, Phil Collins, The Eagles, and many others often filled the air around him. His love for sports was equally passionate; he was an enthusiastic fan of IndyCar racing, Cubs baseball, Colts and Cowboys football, and Pacers basketball with unwavering loyalty. Above all else in sports fandom, he was a die-hard Hoosier fan and held pride in recalling stats from his decades of spectating. 

The ocean held a very special place in Lowell’s heart. He loved basking in the sun with a cold drink in hand and soaking up the serenity of seaside moments. A true foodie at heart, he relished good meals—especially oysters on the half shell—and delighted in discovering new flavors wherever life took him. 

Lowell's zest for life extended into every corner of his world. He adored being a grandpa—one of the greatest joys of his life—and treasured every moment spent with his grandchildren, Elah, Eleanor, and Ezra. His love for animals was evident in the way he doted on his fluffy cats, often sharing stories about them and offering generous belly rubs. 

He also had a fascination with weather phenomena and could often be found watching The Weather Channel to stay informed about the latest developments across the country. Whether it was tracking storms or simply enjoying a sunny day forecast, Lowell appreciated nature’s rhythms. 

Lowell is survived by his beloved wife, Kathleen “Kathy” Hoyer; daughters, Jamie Hoyer and Jessica Pope; son-in-law, Ethan Pope; grandchildren, Elah, Ellie, and Ezra Pope; brothers-in-law, Mark Williams, Johnny Rutherford, Robert "Bobby" Buxton and Rick Tillberry; and his sisters-in-law, Jenene Hoyer and Roberta “Bobbi” Newkirk (Bob); as well as his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Betty Rutherford and Beverly Buxton; brother, Darrell Hoyer; and parents, Caroline and Norman Hoyer.

A free spirit always ready for a new adventure, Lowell brought lightness and laughter to those around him. His memory will live on through the stories shared by those who knew him best—the music he loved still playing softly in their hearts. May his memory bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to know him. 

A Celebration of Life will be held on October 4, 2025, at 12:00 PM at Eric M.D Bell Funeral Home, 220 North Maple St. 

Visitation will be from 11:00am-12:00pm
