Loy "Gene" Burpo Jr.

Loy Eugene Burpo, 86, better known to many as Gene, a lifelong resident of Morgan County, entered eternal rest on Friday, November 22nd, 2024, at the Majestic Care Nursing Home in Bloomington, Indiana. Gene was born on Monday, February 7th, 1938, in Morgan County to the late Loy Eugene and Gayle (Quakenbush) Burpo.
Gene served his country honorably in the US Navy and was formerly the owner of Loy's Cabinet Shop in Martinsville. He later worked in maintenance at Martinsville City Parks and for John Walton Ford in Martinsville.
Gene had a passion for his community and proudly supported Martinsville. He was a board member and sponsor of the Martinsville Junior League Football, as well as a former member of the Martinsville Lion's Club. Though he loved his community, there was nothing Gene loved more than his family, especially his grandchildren. Being a grandfather was his most cherished title.
He leaves behind his loving family including his wife of nearly of 65 years, Beverly (Hawkins) Burpo of Bloomington, whom he married, Jan. 2, 1960; sons, Jesse Burpo (wife, Cindy) and Denny Burpo, both of Bloomington, IN, and Joseph Burpo (wife, Erin) of Kannapolis, NC; daughter, Debby Davis (husband, Jack) of Smithville, IN; sister, Janet Arthur (husband, Billy) of Paragon, IN; like a son to the family, Nick Cragen and his daughter, Amelia, of Martinsville, IN; fifteen grandchildren; and twenty- three great grandchildren.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Jim, Larry and Bill Burpo, and one great granddaughter, Alaina Burpo.
The family will honor and celebrate his life during a private visitation and service with military honors. Neal & Summers Funeral & Cremation Center has been entrusted with arrangements.
