Loyd E. Settle

Loyd E. Settle, of Boone, Iowa, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2026, at West Haven Community in Boone. He was 94 years old.

Loyd was born on August 4, 1931, in Boone, Iowa, to Dow Loyd and Lois Josephine Settle. He graduated from Boone High School in 1949, where his lifelong passion for music was already evident. As a high school student, Loyd played the trombone, excelled as first chair in orchestra, and advanced to state music competition all four years.

Following high school, Loyd attended the University of Illinois, graduating in 1953. He then enlisted in the United States Army, serving honorably from 1953 to 1957. During his military service, he performed with the First Infantry Division Band and played for several musical groups while stationed in Germany.

After his discharge, Loyd devoted his career to music education. He served as band director at Adel High School, Meredith Junior High School, and Hoover High School in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1965, Loyd married his loving wife, Terry Settle, on June 20. They shared 60 years of marriage and made a life together centered on music, community, and shared interests. Loyd and Terry had no children, but considered all students children of theirs.

In 1982, Loyd and Terry moved to Boone, where Lloyd continued his career as music director at Hoover High School until his retirement in 1994.

During retirement, Loyd and Terry enjoyed attending music performances and sporting events in Ogden. Loyd proudly considered himself a loyal Bulldog fan.

Loyd is survived by his wife, Terry Settle. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home in Boone. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by services at 11:00 a.m. Interment with Military Honors provided by the Boone Veterans Council will take place at Linwood Cemetery in Boone immediately following the service. A luncheon will be held afterward at the Boone Historical Museum.

Memorials may be made to the family to use at their discretion.
