LTG Bernhard T. Mittemeyer M.D., 92, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away on January 25, 2023, at University Medical Center surrounded by his family. Bernie was born in Paramaribo, Suriname, South America, to Moravian Missionaries Frederik and Hanna Mittemeyer on October 30, 1930. At age 14 Bernie, his mother and his brothers immigrated to Nazareth, PA, where he lived with a Moravian missionary family and attended Bethlehem High School.

Later Bernie would serve on the Moravian College Board of Trustees. He attended Temple University Medical School and then joined the U.S. Army, where he completed his internship and residency in Urology and served in the 101st Airborne division.

I am saddened at the news of his death. I met General Mittemeyer in 1982 when he visited Landstuhl, Germany. I was a young soldier and was in awe of him when I saw the 3 stars and yes scared. God speed Sir.

We were blessed to know and love and respect Bernie. We remember his quiet way and the way he made everyone feel important, his humor, and his love for you. Truly a good person. Special.

When I was Director of Continuing Medical Education at TTUHSC Dr Mittemeyer and I often found ourselves riding the elevator together. He was always kind to me and we had many short, but substantive, conversations. After he returned to the Urology department I got to know him better while working with the department for their grand rounds. I formed personal friendships with him, Dr Allan Haynes and Dr Joe Dwoskin. My favorite memory from that friendship was the time my husband and I went out to dinner with the three of them. The stories and laughs shared at that dinner were so enjoyable.

So very sorry for your loss Mary Beth. He was the sweetest. When you were at our class reunion, Bernie talked to me about losing my husband and explained a lot about my husband´s heart attack. So precious of him to take the time to talk to me. God be with you and hold you as you go through your loss. Sending prayers for you and your family. Venita

My condolences to the family.
I was honored to work with Dr. LTG Mittemeyer, he was a special man.
The care and time that he gave to his patients was remarkable.
He was an Honorable man and served our community in many ways.
I loved his corny jokes and his sweet laugh .
One day after clinic he asked if I could give him a ride home as Marybeth backed out of drive way and had a little mishap and didn't have a ride.
I gladly gave him a ride home and he talked and laughed the entire time, I had to keep asking him where to go.
I have many memories and he will be missed.
RIP Leutenant General Dr. Mittemeyer.

Mary Beth, I am so sorry for your loss of Bernie. Words cannot express how words can describe the love that each of you had for each other. You´ve had such a wonderful life together at home with each other, with friends & traveling together. I´m so happy you had so many wonderful years together. God will be with you by your side, protecting you & walking each day with you. I was so amazed in the personality shown to me the first time I met you. He seemed to like all and was such a genuine happy person. He had such a wonderful life and with you by his side for so many years I´m sure he couldn´t have had a better life. Love you & prayers go out to you. Nancy Ross
