Lucille Lillian Julich was born in Hayes Township, just north of Schleswig in Ida County, Iowa on September 10, 1923; the daughter of Herbert and Alma (Trenkelbach) Mundt. Lucille spent her childhood near the Soldier River. Lucille started first grade just one month before her fifth birthday. Her first school was located in the country, and she attended for seven years. When she was twelve, the family moved to a home in Crawford County located northwest of Schleswig, Iowa. She attended school there for one more year, finishing eighth grade.
Lucille met Julian Julich and were married on June 2, 1942. They lived north of Arcadia Iowa and later they took a place south of Glidden Iowa for two years before settling north of Carroll on a family farm, where they had nine children. Lucille did an incredible job of raising her three girls and six boys. Lucille lived the last twelve years at Addington Place (Sunnybrook) where she passed away. She made many friendships there with the residents and staff.
Lucille stayed actively involved in her local community. She was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, serving in 1964 the position of Vice President and Treasurer of the Lady's Sodality of Mt. Carmel and Monitor for the Catholic Daughters. Lucille was member of the Catholic Daughters for 70 years. In 1973, she took a job cooking lunches at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School, eventually rising to the position of head cook. She worked at Mt. Carmel School for seventeen years before retiring in 1990. Ever a generous spirit, Lucille volunteered her time to help at a nursing home in Carroll. She also volunteered at New Hope Village Store in Carroll.
Lucille was an avid gardener and processed many vegetables for the winter months. She made world famous dill pickles. Lucille's hobbies reflect a life of playing cards, baking, canning, embroidery, and lovingly stitching quilts. She always loved receiving gifts at Christmas, but more importantly giving her fresh homemade cinnamon rolls for Christmas morning. She loved playing bingo and winning her chocolate candy bars. Lucille will be remember for taking pictures and her amazing organization of putting them in albums.
Since 1986, Lucille has traveled with her family for Labor Day each year to various camping spots in Iowa and Minnesota, rolling out her incredible food for her ever-growing family, sharing memories and warmth and love.
