Lucinda Lohr Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 7, 2018.
Lucinda W. Lohr, 95, died November 5, 2018 in Kennett Square, PA. Born January 7, 1923 in Atlantic City, NJ, the daughter of John J. and Virginia (Baker) White, she thrived for the past 23 years as a member of the Crosslands retirement community. Previously, she lived in Annapolis, MD, Bluefields, Nicaragua, Veracruz, Mexico, and Mt. Tabor, NJ.

The day before her final operation Cindy reassured her children: "I am 95 and have had many more years than I deserve. I am as ready as can be for that which comes next, whatever it will be. Don't worry about me." This final example of Cindy's placing the interests of others before her own exemplified the theme of her life. From her causes to the trips with her grandchildren, Cindy loved her family and loved exotic places, making friends everywhere she went. She exuded energy and spirit and everyone knew it.

She was married to Freeman W. Lohr for 30 years until his death, mother of Jack (Janice) Lohr, Bob (Celia Foley) Lohr and Ginny (Rob Briggs) Lohr; grandmother of Rebeca (Nick) Denny, Mike Lohr (Lydia Tembo), Sarah (Paul ) Wyka and Dan (Taryn) Lohr; Emma Lohr, Noah Lohr and Joseph Lohr; Loren Briggs and Sandon Lohr; and great-grandmother of Benson and Landry Lohr; Ellie and Kate Wyka, and counting. She leaves two sisters, Betsy Rigell and Mary Meagher.

Cindy accelerated her 1943 graduation from Swarthmore during the War to marry her loving husband. In 2015 Cindy was proud to be the first to sign a letter to the Swarthmore College Board of Trustees opposing stock ownership in non-renewable energy stocks. She was a frequent lover of the Metropolitan Opera and was especially devoted to the tenor Placido Domingo. She was the magnet that held her extended family together and nurtured connections across the family tree branches. She fully recognized herself as a seeker, she explored the Universe as well as the planet. From Quaker roots, she found a spiritual home in Alcoholics Anonymous , Unity Fellowship, and Unitarian Universalism.

She supported many causes, including the Nonviolent Peaceforce, American Friends Service Committee, League of Women Voters, Sea Turtle Conservancy, and Citizens' Climate Lobby. A Memorial Service at Crosslands will be scheduled in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations to Citizens Climate Education (citizensclimateeducation.org) in her memory would please Cindy, and would be matched by the organization!
