Luen Chan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Beyers Funeral Home & Crematory - Umatilla on Feb. 24, 2026.
Dr. Luen C. Chan, grandson of Den Y. Chin and Yiu Ying Wong, passed away on February 20, 2026, at the University of Florida Hospital in Gainesville, at the age of 73. He was a brilliant engineer, businessman, and cherished family man.

Born in Taishan, Guangdong Province, southern China in 1952. Dr. Chan immigrated with his grandmother to Hong Kong in 1955, which was then a British Crown Colony. He completed his primary education in Hong Kong and graduated as valedictorian from Tai Tung Middle School in 1968. At the age of 17, Dr. Chan moved to the United States as a foreign exchange student. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Dayton University in Dayton, Ohio, in 1973, graduating at the top of his class. He furthered his education at Ohio State University, where he earned his Masters of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1975 and his Ph.D. of the same in 1979, graduating with distinction.

In 1977, Dr. Chan married Shu Mee Yuen, and together they raised a son, Aaron. They were happily married for 49 years.

His professional journey began at Harris Corporation in Melbourne, Florida, where he worked as a Principal Engineer from 1979 to 1985. He then moved to Boonton, New Jersey, to join Bendix Corporation. In 1990, Dr. Chan took a bold step by founding his own company, All Source Processing Inc. (ASPI) in Parsippany, New Jersey, an aerospace and defense company that developed cutting-edge systems for the U.S. military. His innovative work contributed to military technology, including systems used in the Iraq War. He retired from ASPI in 2003.

Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Chan was the holder of seven patents. He co-invented the digital map system, which has been widely used in all military services to increase situational awareness and save lives. However, his greatest honor came on October 23, 2021, when he received the Congressional Gold Medal on behalf of his grandfather, Den Y. Chin, who served in the U.S. Army in the Second World War as a private ICL in the medical attachment -an honor that brought immense pride to the family.

Following his retirement, Dr. Chan and his family moved to North Carolina, where they stayed from 2005 to 2010. Him and his family moved to Monteverde, Florida in 2010 before finally settling into his lake front estate in Umatilla, Florida, in 2019, where him and his wife Shu Mee spent a majority of their time caring for and enjoying their many gardens.

Dr. Chan is survived by his wife of 49 years, Shu Mee; his son, Aaron; his younger brother and two younger sisters. He is deeply loved by many relatives in New York, New Jersey, and Illinois, and will be fondly remembered by friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Dr. Luen C. Chan's legacy of excellence in both his professional and personal life will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be dearly missed, but his contributions to science, his family, and his community will never be forgotten.
