Obituary for Luis Fernando "Tamy" Tamayo
It is with a profound sense of loss and cherished memories that we announce the
passing of Luis Fernando "Tamy" Tamayo, our beloved grandfather and great-
grandfather, who left this world peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family.
Fernando was the epitome of a gentleman, whose warmth, wisdom, and unwavering
kindness deeply touched all who knew him.
Born in Medellín, Colombia, to Sophia and Raul, Fernando's life was a beautiful
testament to the enduring love his parents shared for 47 years-a shining example that
he carried into his own love story. Fernando met his lifelong partner, Luz Maria, in a
quaint Colombian cafeteria on 82nd Street, where their May-December romance
blossomed, planting seeds of love and legacy that would grow for decades.
Fernando and Luz Maria were staples in Flushing Meadow Park during the 1980s and
1990s, enriching the community with their love and generosity. Throughout the week,
Fernando was a skilled machinist, and on weekends, he shared his culinary delights as
a food vendor in the park. His patience, perseverance, and innate skill as a builder
were gifts he generously passed on to all of us, helping build not just structures, but the
very foundations of our lives.
In their later years, Fernando and Luz Maria were cherished figures in Jackson Heights,
known for their daily afternoon walks. Every day, hand in hand, they strolled along the
streets towards their favorite Colombian bakery-café. There, over cafecito,
almojabanas, and empanadas, they savored each moment together, embodying a love
for life that was as enduring as it was sweet.
A passionate sports fan, Fernando loved the New York Yankees and never missed a
chance to support his beloved Selección Colombiana. Whether it was soccer, baseball,
or tennis, his enthusiasm was contagious. Additionally, he was an avid music lover,
particularly of classic boleros, which brought him much joy and solace.
Fernando's warm, gentle smile and his knack for creative problem-solving were his
trademarks, endearing him to friends and family alike. Following the passing of his
beloved wife Luz Maria, Fernando felt a profound loss, emotionally exhausted by the
absence of his partner. His love for his family never wavered, exemplified by the care
and devotion he showed when we were children and throughout his life.
Fernando is mourned and lovingly remembered by his devoted children, Victor Hugo
and Maria Clara; his grandchildren, Gina, Javier, Alejandro, Pablo, and Edgar, who will
carry forward his spirit and values; and his great-grandchildren, Avril and Mateo, who
brought immense joy to his later years. Fernando now joins his beloved Luz Maria,
united in eternal love.
Luis Fernando Tamayo's legacy lives on in each of us, a testament to the love and
wisdom he imparted. We take comfort in knowing that he and Luz Maria are together
once more, their love as enduring as the memories they leave behind. His last joy in life
was seeing his family thrive, surrounded by love and happiness, a legacy that will
forever resonate in our hearts.
